Looks like the Hornets are officially back!

Not necessarily. The sale of Hornets merchandise will pay back the cost of the rebrand and generate a profit from the decision, giving the franchise more money and better staying power. More money can lead to better players, which leads to a better team. The name also generates attention to players, many of whom grew up Hornets fans (remember the Hornets were basically the Thunder before the Thunder).

Fair point. I don't dispute that it can revitalize this team. I'm glad the Hornets are coming back. My main point though was that if the team is badly managed at all levels of the organization then all we'll have is some fancy new unis, court, and our old name back.

If we're well managed and head in the right direction and towards being competitive, then this move should be a big boost to the team, both financially and otherwise.

I don't know how i would feel if the Panthers left and we inherited the Griffins.

But I know a lion with eagle wings sounds badass!!!

When they were submitting names for the New Charlotte team I actually turned in the Griffins..lol...man im a nerd for greek myths.

Please help me understand why folks would jump on board if we changed our name to the Hornets.  Im excited we are getting our name back, but still not understanding those who keep saying they will finally watch games and become interested.  Last time I checked, it was still the same team wtih same ownership.

Poor fans if you ask me

I am a poor fan then. I just haven't been able to achieve that passion or loyalty for the Bobcats that I had as a kid with the Hornets.

It's what should have always been....The Charlotte Hornets divorced from Shinn

I wouldn't say poor fans - just nostalgic fans that believe a rebrand changes their perspective of a team.

I am all for upgrading the product first over changing the brand like you, but I don't think Cho pays much attention to the latter.

We also really need a coach.

Yeah I do admittedly feel like a "bad" fan at times, but I also feel like a "bad" NBA fan in general by not having a team all these years.

The metaphor of the Panthers moving seems fitting for me here.  If they were to move today, and Buzz Bissinger brought an NFL team back to Charlotte and called them the Buzz, and they sucked, I'd feel pretty damn disconnected from my original local/favorite team.  I mean imagine the Panthers moving, and being replaced with an expansion squad on the same level of the Jaguars or something.  Do I cheer for them solely because they're local?  Or follow my old team, get a new team altogether, become apathetic?  The main problem itself may have been the simple fact that the league as a whole frankly sucked for the most part in the early to mid 2000s, couple that with the absence of, and then addition of a shitty franchise and why would I cheer for the Bobcats, whom I have no connection to other than sharing a state?

Fans becoming fans of the Hornets again more than likely won't be super fans (I won't), but it's just a nice change and something that will have me more interested in following the team, if only from a nostalgia point of view.

I think it is not helpful to wonder why this is the case. There are reasons for it that range all over the spectrum from different posters and to some degree they are probably all correct for different fans.

The only thing that really matters is that it is the case and the franchise is taking the first step to change that. And it is a really good first step.

Second step is producing a product that can capitalize on reconnecting with the fanbase.
