I've heard from a friend that Apple's closed architecture also helps prevent viruses because the nature of closed systems is to have fewer exploits available.

Either way, if you're buying an apple for the expressed purpose of avoiding viruses, thats a rather expensive anti-virus program

OSX is basically OpenStep with upgrades. It features components from FreeBSD and NetBSD with C++ for the I/O with a Unix file system. That's the basis of it anyways and everything they use is Opensource and POSIX compatible. They've made a ton of changes to the OS since the first version though.

TLDR = OSX = XNU kernel featuring FreeBSD with C++ used for I/O and a Unix file system.  It's more complex then that, but that's the basis of it. Darwin OS as the base with a UNIX file system and a XNU modified Kernel.
