If we are going to add another weapon in the passing game before the start of the season, I would definitely prefer another pass catching TE over another WR.

I can agree with this for sure.  It'll be interesting to see what direction Gettleman decides to go when it comes to TE. Obviously he's looking at one year deals.  I'm not sure if he's going to look more at a blocking TE for the run game,  or another pass catching TE.  I'm not a hundred percent sure whether it would really do anything to sign another WR at this point in the season, I'm not sure if there is anyone that we could sign that could truly upgrade the position.  Ultimately I think DG signs a TE but probably not a WR of note.  I think the fact that he completely passes on a WR in the draft provides foresight that he comfortable with the moves we've already made until next year.   However, just the fact that we brought Winslow in for a visit lets me know he still working on that 2nd TE spot.

Check out Brandon Williams if you haven't already. I'm not saying he is gonna be it, but the dude is a freak athlete, great hands, smart guy. He had a neck injury that took him out of college at Oregon but he got a second opinion on it and he is good to go. 

 

It would just be nice to land a quality reciever period in UDFA.

I wasn't so much pissed, but Barnidge had apparently showed some flashes so I don't really know why they did that. I agree we need another TE. We need a lot of things.

 

Williams is someone to follow though. I know he has been out of the game for 2 years, but he wasn't sitting on his ass. Played Basketball in college. (a la Jimmy Graham? lol)

I'm leaning towards that, we stay set at TE.  I've heard the coaches and players rave about both those guys. Will be an interesting camp.

If Williams or Rosario (I always think of Dante when I hear the name) can pan out thats great.

I just want another legit pass catching TE out there. Shockey and Olsen in 2011 worked well for Cam.

I appreciate the fact that we have a solid TE, but the point was that we have needed a quality threat at WR for more years than not while Smitty was on an island.  Like I said before, the article mentions TEs and RBs as being productive in this offense in the past, but  some of you talk like adding a legitimate downfield threat at WR opposite Smitty and having a pass catching TE that kinda fills the role of a WR1-2 is mutually exclusive. It's not.

 

IMO, just because Cam threw for x amount of yards, or the wide-out's or RBs caught this many passes, blah blah blah, doesn't mean that the offense was running on all cylinders or playing up to it's theoretical potential.  

 

People bring up the Pats in this situation, but they are really exhibit one as to why a super talented team needs to finish the deal, and acquire that second threat at WR.  The last good look they had at a ring was when they had Moss and Welker.  Our division rivals (Falcons and Saints) are really exhibits B and C as to why that second threat at WR is necessary to achieve maximum offensive efficiency in today's NFL.  Give me one team that has gone to the mountaintop  with one threat at WR, only complemented by one good to great pass-catching TE.  Give me just one.  

 

Say what you want, but our passing game has been a broken-winged bird for years. That's just the way I see it.

And your leap of logic most of the time takes a good discussion and makes it ridiculous. How does taking a number of wide receivers in the draft over the past 7 or 8 years have anything to do with drafting Newton number 1 overall. That we drafted Clausen which is the only quarterback we drafted as a starter since Weinke? Wasn't Smith a third rounder? How did that work out?? The other guys we drafted or signed at QB were developmental guys like we brought in this year.

When you have a number 1 receiver who is very good you don't bring in a ton of other guys every year. Plus you have to see how a guy develops before you simply bring in several more. And don't say by that logic we should have developed Clausen. When you are historically bad you don't need years to figure that out.

No one said we invested heavily but honestly I don't think we have needed to.

You said we shouldn't keep drafting WRs bc they don't pan out here. In 15 years, in the first 2 rounds we have ONLY drafted 2 2nd rounders. That is hardly trying and striking out....that isn't trying.

So if we shouldn't draft WRs based on that argument....then we shouldn't of drafted Newton bc all we did was strike out on QBs in the same time period while searching via bargain draft picks.

Now do in think we needed to draft WRs in 2003? No. But we should of been active in adding real talent post 2005. Since then it has been a growing issue.
