Take at least a week off of work if you can.

Skin on skin contact is key for a baby to bond with his/her parents.  I spent most of the time at the hospital without my shirt on, and not just to show off my awesome pecs.  It's amazing how much calmer it makes them.

They aren't as fragile as you think they are.

If you're too tired, it's okay to send the baby to the hospital's nursery for a few hours if it's available.

Let the baby sleep in the bassinet if it will.  Don't think that someone has to be holding the baby at all times.  The baby needs to learn to sleep while not being held, and that starts at the beginning.

Nothing will prepare you for the amount of time that your baby can cry without a break.

Combined with the lack of sleep, this could make you angry.  If you feel yourself getting angry, put the baby down in a safe place and walk away.  Even if you think you're under control.  Even if the baby is inconsolable. Depending on your hospital, they may make you watch a video on this very subject before you can leave.

babies are meant to cry...so don't fricken jump to action every little whimper...you think puppies learn fast...they ain't got poo on babies!!!

make sure momma breast feeds as long as possible...it's better for the baby, and makes it easier for daddy to get more sleep!!!

We had luck letting both our boys cry themselves to sleep. We did not let the baby sleep with us. Books will be split on the advice for these things.

There isn't much the male can do besides provide support in the first few months if you are breastfeeding so try to keep the place straight. If the wife is sleeping don't take visitors etc...

she'll be in the hospital for about four days according to the doc, so there'll be a nursery there. I can only get one day off, which sucks, but i'll be there every day except for late afternoons and evenings. not much I can do about it

Consider giving up alcohol. Murphy's law says that the night you and your Mrs. decide to kick back with a couple of bottles of wine, the baby will wake up with 104 fever after you have finished off the 2nd bottle.

I think of every person in the world that owns their own custom-built bar in their home I drink the least. I really only drink at home if there's a football game on. (so I will remember this come september)

its pretty easy until they start teething - then they are cry babies.. but here is the solution- go buy some frozen eggo waffles. use them as teethers.. the cold waffles numbs the gums and taste pretty good for them- plus, all the baby dribble that is produced is caught in the little waffle cups

you are welcome

make sure you use a pacifier that looks like this:

your baby will be able to latch onto that mo-fo without it popping out its mouth every 2 minutes.. i swear, my wife watched other peoples kids that only liked these kinds of pacifiers:
