With 8.46 million do we go shopping or sign Hardy?

I don't understand why everyone automatically assumes that Hardy would want to sign an extension. If I am him, and see the DL we just brought in, I play out my rookie contract, beast out in my contract year and then see who out there pays the most.

I wouldn't count on him signing a long term deal anytime soon..

And then there is this;

We have to ensure we have the $$$$ to sign Newton to a new deal as well.... I think Gman is going to take his cap space into next season and see what happens. I don't see him doing big contracts like hurney did any time soon without them being warranted. Yes, Hardy is bad ass, but I think it would be a little pre-mature.

Just my .02

Really need someone to confirm if we've signed our drafted players yet -- and if not, wouldn't this just soak up ~$5.5Mil of this "new" $8.4Mil cap space?

No brainer if this is the case: let the $3Mil roll over for the dead money left by Gross and Anderson ($8.4Mil) in 2014

This does not include the new draft picks we have to sign nor does it include the June 1st money we get for cutting Anderson. Those two will just about cancel each other out.

Also, we are fine for our cap next year. Look up our cap hit on spotrac. We were way over in the beginning of the year but all of these restructures and cuts have helped future years immensely. We will easily have enough to sign hardy to an extension.

Next years $112 already (Spotrac) - 2.5 rollover (8 current cap - 5.5 2013 draftees) + 6.3 in 2nd year salaries for 13' draftees + 5.5 2014 draftees + 8.7 dead money (naka, Anderson, gross) = (109.5 + 20.5) = $130M 2014 cap number without having LaFell and Hardy on the books.

Just not seeing how we can afford to shop right now

Which is why he wont. Bc its Greg Hardy.

Gettleman didnt draft Hardy. Why would he already give money to a player he has yet seen play a down for him since being the GM?

Gettleman was there at NY and saw first hand with how Jerry Reese played the Osi situation. Gettleman will let this situation play itself out.

so what you're saying is Gettleman is a little bitch and also doesn't watch game film..  classic chuck.

I have read and listened to the debate on this topic and have come to the conclusion that I am sooooo glad we have a GM to make this decision instead of a bunch of guys acting like silly girls.

Having said all that I could see at least one more FA move to address either the OL or secondary.

All that's included in the numbers given. Also, you don't just add on new drafts salaries every year. Remember players are getting cut to fill those spaces. It won't raise our cap space 5.5 mil each season.

I would like to see Hardy show that kind of production again before I would want to commit to a long term contract with guaranteed money.

I love Krakken but to this point he has been inconsistent and if I were GM o would like to see continued production first.

Just my thoughts

I had the same thoughts, but then I started doing the extended thinking, the kind that gets me into trouble....

However, I do not think he has been that inconsistent.  He has been shoved inside to generate a pass rush, he has had to rush the passer when his DTs are rarely doubled.  He seemed to come into his own last year, with the face paint and taunting.  At 290, he can still deliver and is good at stopping the run.  I think his production at the age of 24 was pretty good--very comparable to CJ.

With better DT play, I expect that we will see better stats from the DE position.  That will drive his price up.  We have to keep him from having the numbers to compare himself with CJ.

I think we can get Hardy for about $15 million guaranteed right now.   A six- year deal for about $42 million added to this season.  That would cost us (in my math which has not validity whatsoever) another $2 million this season (his current deal is for $1.3).

It is not inconceivable to expect him to be around 13-15 sacks this season.  Our DTs are focusing on pressuring the passer/collapsing the pocket.  No OT will be able to handle the Krakken if the QB does not have the option to step up.

If that happens, he is costing us a ton.  His agent should begin negotiations in the $10 mllion per range.  The fear of a possible injury and the inconsistency you describe will make him a bargain.

He is 24 now, will be 25.  I like what I am seeing.   He is a core player, and if Gettlemen does not want to overspend, he needs to invest now.
