Deangelo Williams Restructures Contract

Now that Williams has restructured, does that make his original 5-year deal Hurney made look good?  What I mean is, was this Hurney's goal all along...sign the player to a big contract with the hopes of restructuring down the line?  Or was Hurney just a derp-de-derp and Gettleman is just cleaning up the mess.

Somewhere in this thread it was questioned why DWill would make concessions when he could just stay home and collect a check for doing nothing. That is incorrect. Dwill would have been due nothing had we cut him, and he likely would have been disappointed in potential offers from other teams. So the Panthers had all the leverage and DWill did the smart thing.

I'm glad he's still a Panther and very happy he and Gettleman got it done.

Exactly, he did not even take pay cut for this year either.

Could have done the same exact thing next year. He basically just signed a 3 year $7.73 million extension that guarantees him a roster spot for through 2015 without losing a penny in what he was scheduled to make this year.

Very well could have been in the card's. It was his specialty after all. Good luck of convincing the huddle of that tho.

Honestly probably the former, but nobody will admit it.  Hurney's M.O. always was to restructure and keep guys who wanted to be here, for better or worse.  I have no doubts that this same thing would have happened with Marty as G.M. still.  Now where I have doubts, is from a player evaluation, and a players fair market value standpoint.  Those were Hurney's biggest downfalls....

at this point I'm pretty curious why he hasn't been restructured, or won't sometime in the near future..  quite the cap hit over the years for a guy who hasn't made it onto the field.  He has examples all around him of guys helping the team out.  If anyone, Beason should be next..  However, his may require an entire renegotiation at this point.

williams required a complete restructuring as well.

it could be that they have been working on both. it could be they just decided to work on williams first.

i dunno.

A source tells Yahoo that DeAngelo Williams and the Panthers have agreed to a contract restructure that lowers his cap numbers in 2013-2015.
At age 30 with a declining role behind Jonathan Stewart, Williams didn't have much of a choice. He could either accept this restructure or be designated a post-June 1 cut. This deal ensures Williams will be on the team in 2013 as the latter half of a timeshare. The agreement saves Carolina $3.2 million off this year's cap without reducing Williams' total compensation, and also slashes his salary drastically in 2014 and 2015. In return, the Panthers will accept $2.267 million in "dead money" on their 2016 and 2017 salary caps, when Williams won't be on the roster because he'll be in his mid-30s and those two seasons will void based on the reworked contract terms. Williams has averaged just 10.2 carries per game over the last two years, a number we wouldn't expect to rise this season. He's no longer overpaid.

yeah, a lot, heck most of what Gettlemen has done is stuff Hurney would have done if still here.

Hurney's biggest flaws where mortgaging our future and his price point on contract extensions. I think draft wise....Hurney let the HC and scouts handle it.  Most of what Gettlemen is doing though is standard Hurney magic stuff.  Hopefully our FA pickups pan out better under Gettlemen since that is his area of expertise.

Yep I am glad others can see this. I made a thread a while back called the inconvient truth gm edition or something like that stating that before the draft Gettleman had not done anything differently than I would have envisioned Hurney doing. Which is not neccessarily a bad thing.

Now fast foward a bit and I believe after round 1 the draft was handled a good bit different. I am optimistic this is a good thing.

I gotta say that I was and still is kinda expecting a cut at the) RB position. So we've got D Will, J Stew and the Rook from Oregon, along with Poole and Smith pulling up the rear. This has to be the best RB backfield in the league...

Isn't Poole the) from Tennessee? If so, I believe he is with Dallas now.
