Gettlemen continues to get criticism for not bringing in a WR

If you want and need a player....you go get him. You could argue lots of "reaches" if you look at the draft just through one teams eyes.

So draft day trades and cap room are made merely by wishing it so.

CRA's answers to the questions:

Want a player in the draft? "GO GET HIM!"

Need cap room? "MAKE IT HAPPEN!"

lol... solid advice, Madden 2013 GM.

OMG!! You WR people never Quit.

1. CRA trying to be a smartass on the 1st page "we could've gotten Wallace, Jennings, or Harvin" but totally bypassed the implied fact that you have to be able to pay for those guys. Then this genius Idea "well Gettelmen should have freed up 25 million dollars in 2 months to sign them". At that point CRA you should have apologize and stop posting in this thread.

2. Then KT comes in with no facts at all (no video, no diagram, no link) that says our WR's corp cost us games. Please KT tell me the game or the play other then drops (which every WR's in the NFL has) but not a big problem for us because our WR's are rated in the 90' in hands.

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcsouth/post/_/id/43772/best-hands-in-the-nfc-south-5

So please show me what games our WR lost.

3. 76 targets!!! Lafell only got 76 targets and some of you morons expect him to have 70 rec. 1,000 yards and 8 td with only 76 opportunities.

By comparison Julio Jones got 129 targets, , Lance Morgan got 105 targets, and Mike Williams had a 127 targets and these are just the 2nd WR in this division.

agreed. we could have done more to bring in more talent and make the corps better now and in better shape for the future in the event that we lose smith. no doubt ginn and hixon help, but we'll be lucky to get smith through the season in one piece. I'm not sure the corps of lafell, hixon, ginn, and olsen will be giving defenses fits, regardless of how good our backfield is. i mean maybe a genius and innovative OC would be able to put something together but, hey, continuity  and all that.

losing smith would force us to be unbalanced in the offense. adding more receiver talent (WR or TE) would have helped.

I don't think anyone would argue that adding another top QR would help this team....I would love another receiving stud.  But, these are my only points:

1.  Adding another $10M per year to our tight cap for a guy like Wallace, Harvin, or Jennings was just not going to happen.  We can't afford it.  That is a move you make when Smitty retires and his cap space is gone.  Also, we have to be prepared to have major cap space available for Cam.

2.  Adding a guy like Hopkins in the 1st round would have also been a nice addition.  Complete WR that has a good shot at being a legit #1.  With our need at DT and Star sitting there, passing on Star for a WR like that would be plain dumb.

3.  The guys available when we picked in the 2nd round were just not that exciting....and none were significant (if any) upgrades over LaFell or Hixon.

Correcting the mess (cap space and cap space per position) that Hurney left us with is a process.  It can't all be fixed in one offseason.  Gettleman chose to add some mid tier upgrades to the DB and WR....while fixing the DLine.  Not surprising as he is from the Ginats camp where getting pressure on the QB is probably the #1 priority.....and they have 2 recent SB rings to show for it.

There's really nothing debbie downer about it. Other teams with young QBs are making big efforts to surround their QB with weapons, and the sad reality is that the panthers apparently haven't realized yet that loading up on RBs doesn't constitute as such.

We have one extremely talented, but aging receiver.

Beyond that we have a one dimensional TE, Lafell who is only seen as a viable number two in today's NFL by only the most deluded of Panther fans, a pair of insignificant FA signings, including one that could very well not even see the field on offense this year, and a massive parade of camp bodies after that.

It's frustrating for a lot of people to think that Cam may be in his 4th year in the league before we elect to do what we should have done last year and the year before. It just really seems to place us behind the curve with the other teams with other young QBs that are properly trying to build around them.

go panthers?

i don't see the problem of calling the good stuff good and calling the bad stuff bad. we are great in some areas and weak in others. i point out both plenty. I'm not going to sugar coat the bad stuff or just overlook it.

lol i point out the good stuff and get called a homer. i point out the bad stuff and get called pessimistic and a debbie downer. i guess that's the price you pay for having a balanced and hopefully objective view of things.

i see many areas that we are in good shape....RBs, QB, DL, LB, the return game and a GM that has a clue. i think that we'll be ok with the secondary we have and i think the OL should be pretty good if they can stay healthy.

two areas i think we are insufficient in now and could be big trouble down the road HC, OC, and WR. i don't trust the coaching and i think that is where we are weakest and i am not satisfied with the attempts made to improve the WR corps. i want more from my team and I'm tired of excuses. i want wins and those are now the only two areas left that i see holding us back. the cap situation has gotten much better and DT is now a strength of the team an  we now have several legit returner options...those are areas that needed improving in a big way and were.

i don't see any problem with my view of the team. if it looks like i post more than anyone about the couple negative things i see, you aren't taking into consideration that i simply just post more than anyone.

unless you are a pollyanna/sun is always shining type fan, the way i see things isn't really any different than anyone else's. I'm not nearly the most negative person in here and I'm not nearly the most positive one. I'm right down the middle, if anything leaning towards the more positive side of things on the whole.

i don't argue just to argue. i don't get get into pissing matches. i do my best to stay respectful of others. but i also don't back off expressing when i feel good about something or when i feel bad about something...if the topic comes up.

I'm just not sure why you and a couple others seem to make such a big deal about my making a big deal about things i don't like. its every bit as bad/silky as people making a big deal about cam being a superstar and gettleman being  genius...both of which i firmly believe, btw. if you don't like my perspective on a couple things, that's fine. you and a couple others keep on beating a dead horse about me beating a dead horse. you keep on bringing up my talking about certain things and that's just funny to me. you want me to say it once or twice and not mention it anymore but you keep on mentioning that I'm "pessimistic" or a "debbie downer". am i telling you to stop pointing out my negativity about a couple things? nope. i really don't care what you do. but you've said it once or twice...do you really need to keep saying it? (just a thought that keeps getting thrown at me about my thoughts re: shula, rivera, and the WRs).

I was just giving you a hard time, because i'm pretty sure EVERYBODY on this forum knows how you feel about out OC. You taking shots on him when the discussion was about bringing in WR was why i said that. I was just kidding around.  I'm fully aware of our deficiencies, and we will have a better understanding of them after this year, obviously.

I agree Shula, Rivera, the WR, and ill add secondary are the biggest concerns going into the season. Cam not having WR drafted around him we can blame on Marty not Gettleman.  This is a team game, I think he put us in the best position to win next year as our cap would allow us. Only time will tell. But again if you can keep taking shots out our OC, i don't see how you can get upset when i call you a debbie downer every once in a while. It's all in good fun, especially after that ridiculous 17 page Shula thread.

how many years in a row with a winning season? ..... and then compared to us?

how long did it take him to get to the playoffs?..... and then compared to us?

how many trips has he had to the playoffs? ....and then compared to us?

how much closer are they to getting a ring than us?

how many winning seasons have we had since they drafted ryan...and then started building the offense around him?

until we can pull off even one winning season, we can't knock what they've done. what they have done has made them one of the most successful teams in the league....perrinial playoff contenders. what we have done has resulted in losing season after losing season after losing season.

i hope it changes this year, but i know that i can't argue with their success and it's put them a whole lot closer to getting that ring than anything we've done. crap....we've never even had two winning seasons in a row, much less two consecutive playoff trips. they keep heading to the playoffs. they havent missed a year since ryan came in the league.

what they are doing works....at least works a whole lot better than anything we've done. you can't argue results.

How many of those high-priced superstars are they gonna be able to keep

around after Matty signs his new big-money contract?

Roddy White won't be around for too much longer after that. Gonzalez will retire (again) and be replaced by a cheaper player. Same with Steven Jackson who will be replaced by someone cheaper. They already dumped a solid starting RT to start freeing up room.

By the way, here's the OL they can afford for Matty because they're gonna have to pay him: LT Sam Baker (horrible), LG Justin Blalock (solid), C Peter Konz (2nd year unknown), RG Garrett Reynolds (horrible), RT Lamar Holmes (2nd year unknown). Clabo was their best lineman and they cut him. Yeah, good luck against Hardy-Edwards/Short-Lotulelei-Johnson with that line, Matty.

This is why the Falcons window is closing, and it feels awesome.

no question we need a number one receiver. no question there wasn't a valid option to draft one this year, or sign one in FA.

100% agreed.

i know there's little we could have done to improve things more than we did. we were stuck in a really bad situation in regards to the cap and with a GM (and a former HC) who really didn't have a clue how best to address the passing game, esp. WR.

we would have been fools to pass up star. a WR in the second? over short...up for debate. short makes the team better, but i think a WR would have as well. i guess short's impact will be better than a WR we would have selected...at least in the short term, but even that's up for debate.

point blank, the team is better now than it was when gettleman first got the job. it's better in all aspects. we've addressed quite a few things that really needed to be addressed, but it doesn't make it all better. we are still behind the eightball in regards to those couple areas...that much can't be denied.

what's frustrating is that there is very little that could have been done to change it more than we have and making bigger strides to change those areas will taken away from areas that we improved. it was a six of one, half a dozen of the other type deal. robbing peter to pay paul. i hope we do a lot more to fix and address the OL situation and bring in more receiving talent because what we have might be enough to get us by for now...but it's hardly anything that is going to make this team the best it can be. screw getting by...i want this team to be dominant and until WR and the OL and even coaching improves, those areas are in either the short term or long term liabilities.

since we haven't done enough so far, we're going to have to do more soon...unless we are just happy being a little better and waiting 300 frikkin years for rome to be built.

was a valid option in the draft....

unless you are of the mindset stud WRs only look like Megatron and are viewed in his light upon entering the NFL.....which is a very few number of the actual stud WRs that play the game.

cause that's exactly what i said.

Just wanted to go ahead and get it out of the way with all the menstruating going on in here.

I wanted a possible heir to Steve this year but I can wait until next season. We need another TE though.
