Gettlemen continues to get criticism for not bringing in a WR

Who doesn't know that we are going to have to replace Smith in the next few years?  Why do people keep bringing it up as if it is news??  But we have so many other pieces to fix and with limited cap and only 5 draft picks we were not going to fix it this year.  Next year there will be more guys out there in FA and we will have our full compliment of draft picks.  Anyone with a modicum of logic can see that next is a much better time to try and replace Smith than this year no matter how he plays or what happens.  People thinking we were going to do much of anything this year really are thinking with their emotions instead of their brains. The plan shouldn't be to replace him. The plan should be get a good young WR on the team that can learn from Smitty.

The plan shouldn't be to replace him. The plan should be get a good young WR on the team that can learn from Steve Smith. You want Lafell showing him the ropes? I don't. Our future #1 WR would benefit a lot better if he were brought in BEFORE Steve Smith left the team.

Who did Smith credit for teaching him a bunch about being a receiver?  Ricky Proehl.  Who is the wide receivers coach?

Coaches can only do so much. Players benefit from learning from players. Why do you think a good backup qb is so valuable to a young QB. Besides you just proved my point. He learned form Ricky Proehl when both were PLAYING.

We picked up 2 WRs and Ginn has special teams value, so it's like picking up 3 players at the price of 2.

I suspect that if the WRs don't shake out in training camp there will be several decent vets cut by other teams because of cap space issues who would serve as a #2 or #3.

We're going to be fine. We are clearing up cap space like it is going out of style, we have weapons now so that we can compete. A lot of people are not giving Cam enough credit. Do you guys remember the last 7 or 8 games last season? That's the Cam I want to see from the very start next year.  Cam even said in the interview exactly what i wanted to hear from him.

Do we need another WR, most fuging definitely. But Gettleman is setting this team up for the future, right now. We are actually becoming a fiscally responsible team. The D-will restructure just proves that. I wouldn't be surprised if we signed a good to great receiver next year, as well as drafted one in the second.

Hurney hints he may need to restructure well liked Panther player.... Agent laughs

Gettleman hints he will need to restructure well liked Panther player or that player will not be needed.... Agent returns call

agreed. we could have done more to bring in more talent and make the corps better now and in better shape for the future in the event that we lose smith. no doubt ginn and hixon help, but we'll be lucky to get smith through the season in one piece. I'm not sure the corps of lafell, hixon, ginn, and olsen will be giving defenses fits, regardless of how good our backfield is. i mean maybe a genius and innovative OC would be able to put something together but, hey, continuity  and all that.

losing smith would force us to be unbalanced in the offense. adding more receiver talent (WR or TE) would have helped.

I really don't think our lack of offensive weapons were the problem last year. Cam spent the first half of the season not clicking with his check downs and being stuck in a read option that wasn't working for anyone. He has made great strides in decision making and getting the smaller chunks of yards. That seems to be his main focus of this offseason as well. Ted Ginn is going to be running deep routes this season, whether or not he catches all of the passes thrown his way is yet to be seen, but Gettleman said his hands are 'good enough', meaning he should at least catch enough deep passes to make a defense take pause when he's streaking downfield. Hixson is just as good as LaFell, if he stays healthy he is fearless and has great hands. Having both LaFell and Hixson and Smith on the field, and Olsen too will mean someone is open. I think the biggest thing we're gonna see this year are the dink and dunk passes from Cam to guys like Adams, Barner, the other RBs, and Pilares. Getting the ball in those guys' hands off a screen or something will have big play potential all the time, which will help open things up for the rest of the team. We may not have elite guys but we have enough role players right now to keep a defense honest and to move the chains. We just need Shula to make solid play calls and Cam to make good decisions with the football.

In a perfect world, either Rosario or the other TE from Oregon are going to be playing the 2nd TE spot this year and Gettis or Bryant will have a light come on and we'll have a new WR.

There's really nothing debbie downer about it. Other teams with young QBs are making big efforts to surround their QB with weapons, and the sad reality is that the panthers apparently haven't realized yet that loading up on RBs doesn't constitute as such.

We have one extremely talented, but aging receiver.

Beyond that we have a one dimensional TE, Lafell who is only seen as a viable number two in today's NFL by only the most deluded of Panther fans, a pair of insignificant FA signings, including one that could very well not even see the field on offense this year, and a massive parade of camp bodies after that.

It's frustrating for a lot of people to think that Cam may be in his 4th year in the league before we elect to do what we should have done last year and the year before. It just really seems to place us behind the curve with the other teams with other young QBs that are properly trying to build around them.

^ you are such a debbie downer sometimes.

go panthers?

i don't see the problem of calling the good stuff good and calling the bad stuff bad. we are great in some areas and weak in others. i point out both plenty. I'm not going to sugar coat the bad stuff or just overlook it.

lol i point out the good stuff and get called a homer. i point out the bad stuff and get called pessimistic and a debbie downer. i guess that's the price you pay for having a balanced and hopefully objective view of things.

i see many areas that we are in good shape....RBs, QB, DL, LB, the return game and a GM that has a clue. i think that we'll be ok with the secondary we have and i think the OL should be pretty good if they can stay healthy.

two areas i think we are insufficient in now and could be big trouble down the road HC, OC, and WR. i don't trust the coaching and i think that is where we are weakest and i am not satisfied with the attempts made to improve the WR corps. i want more from my team and I'm tired of excuses. i want wins and those are now the only two areas left that i see holding us back. the cap situation has gotten much better and DT is now a strength of the team an  we now have several legit returner options...those are areas that needed improving in a big way and were.

i don't see any problem with my view of the team. if it looks like i post more than anyone about the couple negative things i see, you aren't taking into consideration that i simply just post more than anyone.

unless you are a pollyanna/sun is always shining type fan, the way i see things isn't really any different than anyone else's. I'm not nearly the most negative person in here and I'm not nearly the most positive one. I'm right down the middle, if anything leaning towards the more positive side of things on the whole.

i don't argue just to argue. i don't get get into pissing matches. i do my best to stay respectful of others. but i also don't back off expressing when i feel good about something or when i feel bad about something...if the topic comes up.

I'm just not sure why you and a couple others seem to make such a big deal about my making a big deal about things i don't like. its every bit as bad/silky as people making a big deal about cam being a superstar and gettleman being  genius...both of which i firmly believe, btw. if you don't like my perspective on a couple things, that's fine. you and a couple others keep on beating a dead horse about me beating a dead horse. you keep on bringing up my talking about certain things and that's just funny to me. you want me to say it once or twice and not mention it anymore but you keep on mentioning that I'm "pessimistic" or a "debbie downer". am i telling you to stop pointing out my negativity about a couple things? nope. i really don't care what you do. but you've said it once or twice...do you really need to keep saying it? (just a thought that keeps getting thrown at me about my thoughts re: shula, rivera, and the WRs).
