Gettlemen continues to get criticism for not bringing in a WR

You have to have time to throw in a deep vertical game.Are you not putting the cart in front of the donkey? I did not see a Calvin Johnson in this years draft

and there's no guarantee that we'll be in a position in the draft to get the LT and WR we need next year.

 

people say that next year's WR class is much better than this year's was....but where is the guarantee that the best value pick when we draft will be one of those two next  year? 

 

we are getting backed into a corner where the choice is going to be stick to our guns and make weak attempts at trying to improve our WR corps and just be happy that we have the best RB corps in the league or reach for a WR in FA or the draft.

 

granted our choices were limited this year and i like what we did in the draft, but that doesn't change the future reality that is staring us right in the face. we improved the bottom of the corps by bringing in hixon and ginn, but who have we signed after this season? a WR in his mid 30s who will be making $7mil in 2014 and 2015 who has been flirting with the idea of retirement for several years. beyond that? nada.

 

and we keep making excuses for not doing anything substantive to make sure we are in good shape down the road and believing we'll be able to deal with it later.

Lets take the RBs off the table for these talks...you mean if needs more than a WR that could easily retire after this year, 2 castoff WR rentals, and Brandon LaFell?

And a solid TE.

Meanwhile, guys like Peyton Mannning grew up throwing to super studs.

LaFell is widely regarded as a good #2 WR.

I'm not completely sold on Lafell but it's hard to get the ball when you have Cam, a handful of other running options, Smith, and Olsen to distribute the ball to.

It's like what my mom use to tell me as a kid, when I hastily wanted to eat my dessert.  She would say eat what's on your plate first, before moving on to dessert.  Everyone wants the cake in another receiver, but ignoring the fact we have a main course with the guys we have.  We have excellent running backs, an aged but still superstar receiver, a great tight end who is getting better every year, and now a growing defense with two stud DEs and a great group of DTs.  With this group, we can definitely go to the playoffs, and also could win it all.  Stop looking for your cake, and eat what's on your plate!

Good miiiiiiight be stretching it just a bit.  I'd say "widely regarded as a solid #2 WR" might be a little more accurate :)  But I like him, I do think he's a good #2 WR for us, I just don't expect the average fans/media who pay no attention to the Panthers to recognize him as well as those of us who do appreciate him.

This is a good point.  Only so many touches to go around.  Since '11 Lafell has been one of the more sure handed WRs in the division, if not the league.  But when every game Cam's gonna get his 5-8 rushes, the three headed monster RB corp is going to get (or should be getting, anyway) about 30 touches amongst them, Smitty's going to get about 10 passes his way, Olsen should be getting 5-10, there's only 60 minutes in a game.  Lafell makes the most of just about every time the ball goes his way.

You did a very good job of describing the problem but I  did not see what you would have done differently this year. From how I see it, who will be our future  number 1 WR as the problem not the number 2 spot.I did not see anyone in this draft or a FA that we could afford that fit the billet.The same could be said with OLT.

Which team consistently wins the Superbowl, the teams with great offense or great defense?  There are plenty of examples of teams with great defense and decent offense that go deep in the playoffs and even win the superbowl.  Think Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Giants, etc.  Even the year the Saints won, it was the defense that put them over the top not offense.

We are building a top notch defense and in the long run that will do more for the offense than bringing in another wide receiver or tight end.  Sure if we had unlimited draft picks and unlimited cap space we could make everyone happy.  But we don't and have to pick our places to upgrade.  Gettleman has been with the Giants and knows their winning formula.  I think that we need to let him do his thing for a year or two and look at the results.

It's very interesting you brought that up, because it reminded me of Ginn being available last year, and Hurney could have brought him in then.  Had we brought him in last year, we wouldn't have drafted Joe Adams, and could have gotten Frank Alexander with that pick without having to trade away our third for this past draft.  I was one of the ones who was jumping up and down to sign Ginn last year.  Excellent points!

Who doesn't know that we are going to have to replace Smith in the next few years?  Why do people keep bringing it up as if it is news??  But we have so many other pieces to fix and with limited cap and only 5 draft picks we were not going to fix it this year.  Next year there will be more guys out there in FA and we will have our full compliment of draft picks.  Anyone with a modicum of logic can see that next is a much better time to try and replace Smith than this year no matter how he plays or what happens.  People thinking we were going to do much of anything this year really are thinking with their emotions instead of their brains.

The way I seen Eric Davis struggle to explain the issues surrounding rookie camps and OTAs, I have zero respect for what he has to say.  He does not have talent to be an analyst as is the case with Jamie Dukes.  That "Say What" segment with Dukes is worse than 3 consecutive hours of SportsNation  All that NFLAM show does is cover teams that make big splashes in Free Agency and signs the percieved best offensive players in the offseason.  The Dolphins have been getting major coverage as well as the Eagles and the Chargers.  We all know these teams are going to be trash next year.  Davis said this morning that the Dolphins were going to give the Patriots trouble this year.  Why, cause they overpaid for a reciever and wasted their top draft pick?  This show  pisses me off as I really would like to see some decent football NFL coverage.
