Gettlemen continues to get criticism for not bringing in a WR

How are the WRs in this draft at best #2s?

This draft easily could of had Steve Smiths, Mike Wallaces or Greg Jennings in it. Most drafts do an this was a talented class.

We have a bunch of rentals, bandaids, guys at the end of their rope battling out for what should be bottom of the depth chart.

Smitty's lack of YAC, ability to find the endzone, and his usage in routes changing all concerns me.

I agree with this rebuttle, but it does not take into account what we did get.I agree that the current situation is not making me happy, and I agree that Smitty concerns me too---I just believe in building from the inside out, front to back. Even so,  we would have been idiots to take a 176 lb slot WR ahead of Star at 14, and the next WR picked after we selected at 44 was Aaron Dobson. I would rather have Short than Dobson.

IUnless you are suggesting drafting a WR in round 1 or 2, We HAVE been doing what you suggest over the last 4 years:

3rd round--Lafell did not become the next Moose.; Armanti never became Sproles.

4th round--Adams is no where near Steve Smith

5th round--Pilares is not showing signs of getting a second contract.

6th round--Gettis has yet to become Fitzgerald

Those years, we did not draft a DT.  We have not done very well picking WRs and ignoring other needs.

they where drafted to play different spots but lets not act as though both guys have not shown the ability to play both UT and NT.  i have no problem with the DTs but to double dip at one position is a bit to much. name another time this method have worked for a team, especially with back to back picks? why does a WR have to Julio or Clavin to be considered for the 1st round?its a reason those types go in the top 10 picks, and will not make it 14.lets forget about the Dez, Hakeems, Bay- Bays, and Percys of the league who where also drafted in the 1st round.with the way the nfl is evolving, the #3 WR or slot guy is a starter as well seeing around 20+ snaps a game. you say WRs take years to develop, but so does DT and any position drafted. again we have brought in some bad mid- to late round talent at WR who has pretty muched developed to all they are going to be. that talent might get a little better but i will be surprised to see any WR break out on this team next year. just look at last years mid to late round WRs who numbers compare to Lafell as rookies, so late round talent could have been brought in to compete.

Gettleman drafted people on day 3 that could be key players in the future. but he also ignored 1 position for the present and future by not bringing in a WR, and has pretty much forced his hand for next year. there are 5 players at one position who contract ends at the end of the year, and im not going to go on about building up around your QB like successful teams have done.but lets look at what the teams who drafted a QB the same year Cam was drafted have done.

Panthers

Shockey- was brought in before cam was drafted, but is no longer with the team

Olsen

Pilares

Adams

Ginn

Hixon

Jags

Cecil Shorts- mid round WR

Taylor Price- no longer with the team

Larent Robinson- no longer with the team

Lee Evans- no longer with the team

Justin Blackmon

Mohammad Massaquoi

Ace Sanders

Titans

Donnie Avery- no longer with the team

Craig Stevens

Kendall Wright

Taylor Thompson

Delanie Walker

Justin Hunter

Vikings

Kyle Rudolph

Steve Burton

John Carlson

Jerome Simpson

Jarius Wright

Greg Childs-nlt

Greg Jennings

Cordarrelle Patterson

Bengals

Brandon Tate

AJ Green

Ryan Whalen

Armon Binns

Andrew Hawkins

Mohamd Sanu

Marvin Jones

Dane Sanzenbacher

Tyler Eifert

Cobi Hamiltion

49ers

Ted Ginn- Panthers

Ronald Johnson

Mario Manningham

Randy Moss-nwt

AJ Jenkins

Quinton Patton

Vance McDonald

Anquan Boldin

do anybody see the correlation?

tldr version

teams that drafted QBs in the top 2 rounds in 2011 have made a better effort to surround there young QB with weapons to pass to. and the 3 teams( Bengals, Vikings, 49ers) who did the most went to the playoffs last year.

Da City,

I agree wth you most of the time and I agree partially here. We had multiple needs at DT--lets not fool ourselves there.  I also agree 100% that we need to get Cam weapons.  This however, is a situation where we have 2 plugs and 3 holes.

If we were going to grab a WR, It should have been in the second round.  However, Hunter, Hopkins, Patterson, and Woods were gone.  Heck, after we picked, another 16-18 picks went off the board before Dobson was selected, the next WR.

I wanted a WR, and your points are solid--We need a quality WR, and in the fourth round, there was nothing better than what we have, IMO.

Blame Hurney for this crap.  He ignored WR, CB, and DT for years.

Ah hellz, I'll play...again.

Star in the 1st was better than any WR.

Short in the 2nd was better than any WR.

It just happened to fall that way. We cannot go back and have a redo. We go with what we have. And what we have is down right scary. Some believe in the draft, me, some, as always, would do things differently. Nothing new here. Move on.

The question could be. Was WR the hole, or was the DT position? We turned a hole into an asset. A WR would have only upgraded with the addition of a true #1 WR. That wasn't going to happen, not in this draft.

And lastly, the Offense proved down the stretch it was figuring this thing out. You could see we were pretty good. You could not say the same for our D, and especially the DT position. They needed to fix DT. They knew it, we knew it, and the whole world knew it. The extent at which we ATTACKED the position is what threw folks for a loop.

tl/dr version. We very well could have a top 10 Offense to go with our top 10 Defense. Try and put that fear of the past away, and just enjoy the effing ride.

The only WR we need is a WR that can eventually replace Smitty.

I am curious as to the specific receivers we should have picked in either the draft or FA? I agree we need a receiver but not necessarily one that cannot be a starter.

This is the question that will never die. lol

I am not sure why some folks think we could get any WR that could be better than our two DTs? We turned a hole into an asset. I just don't think of WR as a hole.

After Star and Short, we were not taking a project WR. Not with a roster full of that type WR. We can't afford, or don't want to afford, a Vet. IMO, None can come in and supplant Lafell. Let alone challenge Smitty anyway.

Depends on your point of view on the state of things at WR. Me? I am happy with what we have. But...I am getting somewhat nervous about replacing Smitty. My dream is that next year when we draft in the mid to late 20's one of those good WR will be there for us. Seems like things are working for us right now. Why not this?

I am nervous as well about Smitty but without cap space I just do not see who we should have jumped on and unfortunately unless next years draft is full of talented WRs we will be in the same boat.

This will be a thorn in Gettlemens side until someone either develops or we find a stud in the draft.

At this point in time, we are who we are. How to fix this? My first hope is next years draft. There is usually one or two guys still around at the bottom of the first round. That would be best case.

If we have a good year. And Gettlemen thinks we are close and a WR could put us over the top. Then maybe, just maybe, he will dip into FA to nab a quality WR. I say this option is if he feels we are only 1 quality WR from being a complete team. That may be the case by years end.

If the DBs play well, and the O-line plays well, and we have a good year. Maybe a FA WR is in the cards. Who knows?

But right now. I see no sure fire fix.
