Gettlemen continues to get criticism for not bringing in a WR

Smitty is not going anywhere he's already stated he's going to finish his career in Carolina sheesh, of course he pondered about it a few seasons ago when he was staring at the possibilities of finishing his final few seasons with Clausen as his quarterback on a team going nowhere fast. Every fan knew Fox was a dead man walking so to speak even before that 2010 season even started, so it's not like Smith or any of the veteran on that team didn't see the writing on the wall.

Smith just wanted the Panthers to be competitive and get a QB here that could get him the ball <insert> Cam..

But the Panthers do need to get Super Man some more weapons though, every team with great QB's are constantly trying to get more weapons for their guy, as great as Smith is and has been, it does say something about the direction the franchise has taken at the receiver position if a 34 year old wideout is still by far your most explosive player at the position.

Plus Smitty could get hurt...so I agree with the need but unless we would have grabbed Hopkins or someone at 14 we would not get our guy.

Just wondering--would there ever be a consideration to convert Barner to WR?

I guess we will have to see how he looks with the ball in his hands .....I do not know if he has that Tavon Austin skill set to do everything.

The role that he seems to fit is more of a scat back.  A change of pace guy who catches a lot out of the backfield.  He will get plenty of yards after the catch and could line up in the slot sometimes but he really doesn't have the size or strength to fight corners off the line.  He is better coming out of the backfield with a free release lined up against a linebacker or a safety.

Don't know about his strength or hands (although if he's a scat back he must have some), and obviously different skill set to fight off corners at the line, but his height and weight essentially identical to Smitty, and 4.4 speed a plus, so I thought it might be an interesting idea.

Smitty isn't about the height or the weight, or even the speed.  It is about the burning desire to prove them wrong and become the exception to the rule. The chip on his shoulder that makes him great. Lets see if Barner has that before we know if the potential is there. I remember when Robinson was the next Smitty years ago. Injury cut his career short. Takes more than the physical aspects to be successful.

Barner is a RB that can catch the ball well. He may be able to do some slot work, but let's keep him as a RB until he can handle more than that. Hellz, let's wait until he actually makes the roster before we put too much on his plate.

I realize we don't have the WR corp most folks view as elite. But let's see what the kids we have can do before we try and turn a late round RB into a WR.

Well if we drafted a WR and not Star then they would be criticizing us for not helping out the DT position enough

Well, we would have still used our 44th pick on a DT....and no DT in Panther history would have been drafted higher.

Jenkins coincidently was also the 44th

There were too many other needs and I believe we have plenty of talent at the WR position already on the roster. Smith, LaFell, Ginn, Hixon, Gettis and the handful of others. We are fine. As long as Steve Smith is here, we don't need to rush to get a #1 type receiver

Sure if your ok with losing. Our #1 WR is 34 years old so to you that equals we don't need one until he is gone? Dumb dumb dumb. O yea the others you mentioned- Lafell, Ginn, Hixon, and Gettis all of their contracts are up at the end of the year...

LOL.... we should've passed on Star!?!?!

32 GMs in the league I'm willing to bet at least 20 would have made a different pick it is all about difference of opinions. Just because Star was a great pick doesn't mean a player like Hopkins wouldn't have been.

We could have drafted Mark Barron last year and won a few more games with him on the field over Nak if Beason stayed healthy. You just never really know what's going to happen.

It's easy to speculate what is a good pick and what is a bad pick but you don't know until the games are played.

You can look at it from both ways WR and DT. Dwan is 32, two year contract, who do we have after that? Was Star a better value or was a WR? Like you said we just don't know until they take the field. But i have a feeling Star is gonna be pretty damn good, just from a physicality perspective.
