" – Watch Steve Wilks on the practice field for one minute, and it's obvious that the Panthers' secondary coach and passing defense coordinator is in his element.

"We are coaches, but we're teachers first," Wilks said after dismissing the latest additions to his class at last weekend's rookie minicamp. "When you go in that classroom each and every day, you're presenting a lesson for those guys to learn."

With undrafted rookie free agents Robert Lester and Melvin White as his prized pupils, Wilks worked on what he considers an overlooked skill for the defensive back of today: the backpedal.

"DBs in college have really lost the art of backpedaling, and here we really emphasize staying square and bursting into our backpedal," Wilks explained. "The longer you can stay square, the better your transition is to breaking for the ball."

I was going to say the D-line but Scot beat me to it

The Dline/pass rush will def help in a major way. But Wilks is one of the best DB coaches out there. He seems to get the best out of all his guys, everywhere he's coached. He was a huge reason all those young guys played the way they did, at the end of last season.

Make no mistake, the greatest asset to our secondary is Charles Godfrey. I don't think Wilks is going to be picking off many balls or wrapping up many running backs.

No, he just teaches all the inexperienced DBs how to properly play in the NFL.

BTW, he could help Godfrey learn how to wrap up when he tackles. Cuz its not his strong suit. He tries to take ball carriers head off.

Anybody think that with our great pass rush, it might be in our best interest to acquire (or coach up) some extremely physical corners with great jamming/press skills? I believe Josh Thomas is a pretty physical corner, but with how much pressure we get on a regular basis, I feel like we'd be better suited jamming receivers at the line to disrupt the short routes and give our d-line a little time to get to the QB. That's why it was so infuriating seeing our DBs play so far off the WRs earlier last season, cause that did not at all play to the strengths of our d-line. I'm not sure how many of our CBs fit that description...just a thought though.
