Another goody is the Aurora, NC Phosphate mine.

I've been out there and it's pretty amazing.

They pump out MILLIONS of gallons of fresh water from the Castle Hayne aquifer every week and dump it straight into the river :(

The company has done some good things. They pay the locals for well's that need repair and actually offered the triangle area the water for free.

Of course RDU turned it down because it would hurt their water issues and made to much sense for Government to grab a hold of.

A little bird told me the #... 85 million gallons per day of fresh water pumped out of the aquifer and into the sound.

Also they did offer it for free to the Triangle, but I think the real reason for them not taking it was that the pipeline was going to cost something on the order of $350 million and they couldn't afford it at the time... and the drought was starting to wane then as well.

However, it is quite an impressive operation. They dig over 200' below the surface with giant freaking huge machines.

350 million for basically not ever having to worry about water in the Triangle (that is growing out of control) seems like a pretty reasonable deal to me.

I've been out there too, it's really amazing.

They do have some pretty serious environmental threats. Huge settling pools of toxic water, piles of toxic dirt, etc etc. Operation seemed to be pretty solid tho and they actually plant some trees and such back when they are finished.

It's actually a pretty cool place to take a group of kids. Letting them dig for fossils and such. I snagged most of a Megalodon tooth when I was out there.

Oh I don't disagree... and I was quite ready to map the route for them... for just a small slice of that $350M... but they balked at it.

I'm biased because I've made a career and a pretty good living out of the Alberta Oil Sands!!

but to show the other side...here are a couple of pictures where the open pit mines used to be!!!  Not saying it's perfect and there's a lot of improvement that can still come...but the media would rather you didn't know about the millions and millions of dollars that big oil spends on the environment and reclamation.

not to hijack...just saying!!!
