Ronde Barber: Steve Smith toughest receiver to cover

Recommended Posts

Srsly?  Has it been 4 consecutive years?  Damn time flies quick!

Seriously time does fly. This would be year #5. If he didn't have all those incidents, he would have been sporting that Golden C for the past 3-4 years.

If anyone knows where that patch can be bought from please let me know, I would like to put it on my jersey.

Of course you would say that.

OMG sound the alarm.  I comment was that wasn't only blind homerism.

Here is an example of reality for you to ponder.  Reggie Wayne and Steve Smith.  I picked Reggie only b/c he is Smith's exact age....and one of many WRs someone else brought up.

Reggie Wayne - 3 career games against Tampa

Steve Smith -  20 career games against Tampa

But I would imagine any CBs that consistantly got a taste around the 2005 era version of Smith would have said the same.  But the above matters....not when talking about Steve but simply when players talk about others in general.

Fair enough lets see how smitty stacks up against his peers in the division vs TB since, oh, idunno, lets say 2008.

Roddy White: 1 - 100yd game 2 TD's

Marqus Colston: 2 -100 yd games 0 TD's

Smith: 3 - 100yd games 2 TD's

Julio Jones: 2 - 100yd games 3 TD's (Still not sure if its Jones or White that is ATL's #1)

Same amount of 100 yard games as the other #1 pass catchers in the division

Before you go into but Tony G and Jimmy G!! I've already looked at that too. Tony has 0 100yd games and only 1 TD and Jimmy G has 1 of each but only played 3 of the 5 seasons and missed 1 game to injury.

Smith's production came in '08 and last year. '09 sucked and we all know about 2010. Smith has the history and the stats against his divisional peers. If the man had consistent QB play he would be head and shoulders above any other divisional #1 receiver. Julio is catching up with the Bucs but Rhonde wont be a factor in that so its moot now.

Anyway found this to be interesting.

not to get in the middle, but just sayin. . .

its the guy drawing the tougher db matchups. Jones aint as good as White, he might be at some point, but right now the honors goes to Mr HandsOfBrickerson.

Your not in the middle of anything.  CRA's post got me thinking so I did a little research and this is what I found.  I'm in no danger of going full tard on this at all.  lol  Im confident and secure and proud of Rhonde's comments about Smitty.  He earned them.

The original example doesnt hold water for me. By having more games against Smith, Barber is an expert on the subject.

The expert on the subject has played how many years? yeah not looking it up. . a crapload. He's played against them all and he's gotten to game plan against them multiple times a piece. He has studied all of his opponents game's and tendencies for preparation. He's examined those threats and then executed his own game plan on the field. He's experienced defeat and success with that over 100 times. He's had 10 years to learn and often reflect on. . . whos the baddest mufugger in this league?

The fact that he's had more instances to defend against Smith shows that he has more experience and proof as to WHY he's the hardest receiver. Oh, can he count the ways in which Smitty can work him over?!

I'm not trying to call you out but I'm just wondering if you've ever played sports? High School, anything.

The more you play against someone the better you learn their tendencies. The fact that Ronde still claims Smith is the hardest person he has faced is amazing. He had tape on people but the fact he had 20 career games against Ronde, further proves that Smith is one badass mofo.

Smith also got to gameplan against him 20 times....where as other WRs can't even use up all the fingers on one hand. That matters.....exposure to opponents matters. A NFC LT who has played in Peppers' division likely would find him easier to compliment than Freeney.

Tape goes both ways....Smitty and Carolina got to study the weaknesses in the Rhonde/Tampa D SIGNIFICANTLY more than almost the majority of any other CBs.

Again, not a knock on Smith. But guys who spend there careers against each other....are going to have an easier time complimenting or dissing each other over guys they barely even sniffed.

Yes, I played sports. The biggest beef people have with my stances here probably are rooted in the fact I likely am a bigger NFL fan than specifically being a Panther fan

So It goes both ways with all of the other players they have tape on. The fact that he physically played Steve Smith that many times and still claimed him to be the best is astonishing. I am too a big NFL fan. I literally have four friends that are panthers fans. The rest are all over the place from the Lions, SF, Bengals to the Giants. So i'm always learning new things around them cause they are big football fans like me. I honestly don't have a beef with you, i just think you like to be contrary at times. no big deal.

Well, i do like to bring up different views...plus when people crank things up a notch I think it is needed.

This is unsurprising. Smith consistently gets this kind of recognition from league guys. Inside the game he's known as one of the all time premier players at the position. Shame the media refuses to see it.
