Let's talk Tampa Bay and how they compare to us

Recommended Posts

A close buddy of mine is a die hard Bucs fan. His fandom is comparable to mine with the Panthers, and he knows his football. And after getting in some pretty heated arguments with him, I'm wondering on some ways to attack him and shut him down. Our arguments are always a stalemate, no winner no loser.

And I want to know what you esteemed football experts think.

1. When I hit him with the fact that they were 32nd in pass defense, he comes back at me with the additions of Revis and Goldson. He also hits me with Mark Barron and I want to know what you guys think of him. Is he REALLY that good? As far as Eric Wright, fug that guy, Josh Norman had a comparable season to him.

So my question is, does their secondary improvements make their defense elite? They were already first in rush defense.

2. As far as their offense, what do you guys think? Are they a huge threat? VJax had 1400 yards and 2 TDs, Mike Williams had 1000 yards and 9 TDs. Then there's the Doug Martin mystery...can he repeat a 1400 yard season?

Obviously I get him on Cam everytime, but he still refuses to acknowledge that Cam is a better QB which is purely homerism and not worth my time.

I mean really, how do we match up to them? And how to I tell this motherfuger to shut up and respect the Panthers?!

Where is his pass rush t complement that secondary.

Regis has never had to produce in a system that doesn't really attack the qb.

Im actually an ECU fan (from New Bern) and a Bucs fan as well.

Does the Revis and Goldson signing make Tampa's D elite?  No, or I should say not necessarily.  Anyone that suggests that it doesn't greatly improve the Bucs defense is either lying and/or lacks football knowledge.  Revis, who is arguably the best CB and defensive player in the league, will not only help shut down whichever receiver he matches up against but he also helps every other corner on our roster.  Last season Wright was fighting a nagging ankle, he wasn't 100%.  And Wright isn't a #1 corner either.  With Revis, Wright can slide to the #2 spot or even the nickel where he is better suited.  If Johnthan Banks looks good in camp he will also be an upgrade over last season.

You have to remember, last year Tampa was fielding EJ Biggers and Leonard Johnson as their #1 and #2 guys along with an aging Ronde that never played Safety before.  Anyone that can't see that Revis, Banks, Wright and Goldson are huge upgrades over that is blind.

Next you bring up Barron.  Everyone knew Barron coming out would be best suited to play a Palomalu role, in the box defender type to help with the run and make plays closer to the line of scrimmage.  But since Ronde was back at safety with him, Barron had to take on the role of FS and play deep because Ronde couldn't.  Barron has decent cover skills for a SS but thats not what he excels at.  Now Goldson isn't the best in coverage relative to some safeties, hes still pretty good.  Signing him will allow us to use Barron where he is best, something we couldn't do last year.  Expect a significant increase in production from him.

Now defensively overall, the only way this team will have an elite D is if the d line can not only stay healthy, but also reach their draft potential.  Not sure if you knew this but, we have never had McCoy, Bowers, and Clayborn on the field as starters at the same time.  At least one has always been injured.  They are finally all healthy right now and are expected to produce much more this season.  Bowers was thought to be a top 5 pick before he was injured, AC has shown flashes in his first year and we all know how much of a beast McCoy was last year even with the likes of Teo'neshim and Roy Miller playing on the line with him.

Tampa's D will be much better.  Elite?  Probably not.  Stout?  I can see it.

Well if it's just trash talk.

1. The number 1 run defensive is misleading. Why would you run when you're facing the 32nd pass defense? Their pass defense should be better because there's no where to go but up.

2. The real mystery is Josh Freeman. He looks great in some games and wtf garbage in others.

Also they went 1 out of the last 6, where as we won 5 out of the last 6. Schiano got figured out, and he's a one trick pony. They're going to be a steaming pile of poo this season, and we're going to embarrass them for the games we gave them last year.

Offensively, it's as simple as this, if good Free shows up, we are a top 10 offense no question.  We have to remember that for about 6 weeks last season, Tampa had the best offense in the league statistically because Free was on it.  He was relatively accurate, he took shots downfield when available, he didn't throw off his back foot etc.  Tampa has the tools with V Jax and Mike Williams (one of the best #2 wideouts in the leage) and Martin in the backfield.  Most notably however is with Nicks and Joseph back, our o line is one of the best in the league.  TE and slot is a weakness for us so I would stop short of saying this offense is elite unless we land a gem in training camp.

Your first and second points are right on the money.  Your last point however is extremely short sighted.  Did Schiano get figured out?  What does that mean exactly?  He wasn't running some gimmicky scheme.  Thats like suggesting teams figured out the nickel package with corners playing man.  Its a bit ridiculous.

What happend is what I stated above.    We had an undrafted rookie and EJ Biggers as our starting CB's.  One of our few legitimate pass rushers was out in AC and Bowers was just being eased back in after tearing his achilles.  We had Roy Miller at NT, he's alright against the run but non existent on passing downs.  We had no viable 3 tech behind McCoy so we could not take him off the field and Daniel Teo'Neshim at RDE.  Ronde Barber, bless his heart, was our safety and Barron was forced to play to his weaknesses because of it.

Injuries + lack of talent in the secondary + lack of depth at d line = bad defense.  It's that simple.

Tampa's Oline with those probowl guards, scares me more than anything else on their team.

It's what I will be watching most when we play you guys.  It will be interesting to watch Penn, Joseph, Nicks, Zuttah, and Dot against Hardy, Dwan, Star, and CJ.  Huge matchup there.

...if (they) can not only stay healthy, but also reach their draft potential...

If that's the guidelines we're using here, your QB might want to go ahead and wet himself thinking about facing our front 7 twice this year.

Tampa should have a tough defense this year, I'll give you that. But, y'alls season it's gonna be riding on the big, inconsistent arm of Mike Glennon before you know it. (And I'm a State fan.)

It'll be nice knowing that the POWERHOUSE that is North Carolina State University Football has 3 starting NFL QBs. The fact that it will be at the center of a rival team's demise, and likely regime change, will only make out that much sweeter.

Never forget...

Usually when a team has a bottom ranked pass defense they have #1 rush defense and vice versa.

Just look at us over the last decade "#2 pass defense", but letting up most yards in the leauge rushing, who would bother passing on you if they could just run all over you?
