The only issue I would have at this stage with cutting D-Will is Stewart coming off an injury affected season. I appreciate this was the first time in his Panthers career where he's struggled, but some players get injured then it becomes common. If Stewart returns to full health, then he's good enough to be our lead back. I'm not against cutting or trading D-Will, but at this stage I'd probably keep hold of him.

My problem is not bringing him back but not for 5 million when you could bring in another for 1.5 million at tops.That leaves 3.5 million that could get you a starter at DB or OL.I would have to let him go.The question is would you rather have DWill or Woodson and a rb  that you could pick up for 1.5 million ?

Just to clarify. If Stewart is healthy then it might make sense to cut or trade D-Will in order to free up cap space, regardless of what it is used for (eg. Hardy extension, free agent additions etc). So I agree with you on that, but if there are question marks over Stewart, then I think keeping D-Will gives us a legit starting running back. It also gives the team the opportunity to move Stewart if they feel that is the better scenario.

1.5 million can land us a good enough back like Blount, or perhaps a Felix Jones (?) type. But if Stewart is healthy and is our guy going forwards and we cut D-Will, then personally I'd rather we promote Barner and Poole than sign another back.

I think we are much better with D-Will than without him.  It's just that Rivera and crew have so badly misused our bunch of backs, it's sad we are even having such conversations.  This is a mean group of guys we have, it's just plain sad we are even thinking about breaking them up.  There's still so much potential if only Rivera gets his head out of his butt. (Which should be much easier now that Chud is gone)  Hopefully, we redo DeAngelo's contract, and lessen his cap hit next year.  These guys should retire as Panthers.

I would cut DWill and not think twice.   Take a look at the stat sheets.  No brainer.  I think Gmen has waited for a trade--DW is about 30% to be on the roster in September, if you use logic and not emotion.  They just want to kick the tires on Barner and take a look at Poole again first....I would like to save money and consider a 1 year contract for a RG.  I am not convinced Kugbila will be ready and I know Hangartner won't be.  

 

Gross did not take a pay cut so the team could sit on $9 million. If they do not sign a RG, I would go ahead and lock Hardy up long term.  Reason?  With better DT play and fewer trips to the 3 technique to rush the passer, he should have a stellar season in 2013. I imagine we could get him for about $7 million per season on average now.  If he gets 15 sacks, he is going to want CJ money.  

 

I am not as concerned about WR as the next guy seems to be, so spending the money on Hardy NOW could save a lot of money going forward.  I am under the impression that we are about 2 years away from paying a QB about $22 million per season. so we need to keep the contracts low.

I agree....I think he could play safety or corner,call plays in the backfield, and be a mentor to a very young group of DBs .If I could get him at 3 million I would pull the trigger.

 

From a PR perspective this is an opportunity to bring in a hall of fame DB which should excite the fans on game day.

My sentiments exactly...if there's articles on the internet about how the man said he doesn't care he just wants to play football. I mean what more could you want? A Hall of Famer that has the drive and desire to finish his career strong.

 

Adding vet defensive players to a young defense works so well all the time. Hell, it's worked in Carolina. Kevin Greene and Reggie White come to mind.

 

The worst he can say is no! We can afford to bring him in for more than vet min too. Not much more than vet min, but more nonetheless. What could help our case toward him is that he really could be the missing piece. Adding a star in the secondary is really the difference between making this team respected on paper and getting trash talked about us on a daily basis by the media.

 

I think a guy like Woodson could really be the difference between playoffs and 7-9.
