What about the positions where you have no one that should be starting....those are the spots that are the issue IMO

Run the ball, use play action and stuff the run until everyone gets up to speed... start basic and then introduce the wrinkles, don't start with the wrinkles (read option, etc) and then scramble to try to get back to basics when the wrinkles don't work. 

 

We wasted a lot of time early last season waiting for the read-option game to gain traction before we realized opponents were selling out to stop it... if something isn't working this year, I hope the coaching staff reacts much faster.

i agree, but the problem with that is historically how long it's taken for the ground game to take off. unless things really turn around this year for the ground game in terms of effectiveness (and it's not just a play=action vs. read option thing because it goes back several years with fox here), if we rely on the ground game to start us off, we're in worse trouble than we were last year.

I believe, given the situation that was inherited, the team is in a better place than last year.

Have a good gameplan and coaching. Both team heading into week one are not truly mid-season ready but the coach who adjust better and has the most effective gameplan wins. Its why Chud fuged us over last year. His gameplaing stunk.

I think just having Mike Shula as the coordinator will fix our slow start issues :)

 

I honestly believe this.  Everyone here is talking TC but it's those god forsaken preseason games that we all complain about that will tell the story.  Chud was too busy trying things out instead of getting the offense, especially Cam & the OL, mentally ready for anything by just working together.  Too many gimmicks, too much passing in the preseason.  I think Shula will take the more positive team-building  approach.

Does anyone remember when the OL had an RV at Wofford where they all would hang together around practices?  Our Super Bowl year for sure.

 

It'll be interesting to see if Kelly takes any lessons from Sciano's first year in Tampa.  They came out roaring with that good ole' college spirit lol.  Then fell off in the last 10 games.  That's what college-type hard practices will get you.  Worn out players.

if they want to win, they'll appreciate it. once they see the results on the field, they'll appreciate it more.

 

of course the 10+ year vets are going to be groaning and trying to get out of it. same with the lazier players out there. it's a change to their world that requires more work. it's not fun, but it needs to happen if you are going to expect success and excellence from yourself and your team.

 

those who really want it and haven't grown complacent will adapt and buy into it. those who don't would probably be hitting the streets the next year looking for some one year deal well below what they thought they'd be getting and/or winding up with some team that sets the bar really low.

 

 

It all starts at the top - I dont see Rivera having all that much energy himself.
