How will Mike Shula change our offense?

In 1999, Shula's last year in Tampa Bay he had Trent DIlfer in at QB and 27th ranked offense. Leading receiver was Jaquez Green with 791 yards.

In 2000, the Bucs had Shaun King as QB and ranked 6th in offense. Leading receiver was Keyshawn Johnson with 874 yards.

So Keyshawn only had 75 more yards than Green the year before. Does that move you from 27th to 6th in offense?

One could easily argue Shula had the better QB as Dilfer went on to win a Superbowl as starter for the Ravens and Shaun King would be soon out of the league.

Hell, even the run game improved after Shula was fired, it went from 15th to 9th. Same running backs. Same OL. New coach.

The Bucs ranking did not go up because better players were brought in. It went up because they had smarter gameplans, better preparation and adjustments. All of that falls on the offensive coaches.

You can be optimistic about Shula, thats fine. We all hope he has learned a whole lot over the past few years. But stop trying to sugar coat his OC history. It stinks.

The difference in offensive points scored between 2001 and 2002:

324 > 346 = +22 pts, or 1.3 pts/game

The difference in defensive points allowed between 2001 and 2002:

280 > 196 = -84 pts, or -5.25 pts/game

League wide, the 2001 team actually ranked 15th in points, while the 2002 team dropped to 18th.

The evidence does not support your thesis, especially when one considers the head coach changed between a defensive, conservative coach in Dungy to an aggressive, offensive coach in Gruden.

And before you say the 2001 team was supported by defensive scoring, note that the 2001 defense only scored two defensive TDs, while the 2002 team scored 5 defensive TDs and a safety.

So to say that the Super Bowl squad was lifted by a resurgent offense isn't remotely true.

In fact, the all-time Buccaneers franchise scoring record (prior to last season) was set in 2000, by the Shula-led offense, while Gruden didn't field another offense that scored more than 301 points until 2007, while Shula did so three years straight as the OC.

Shula was a QB coach in Miami in 2000.

That amazing year 2000 record scoring year was the year AFTER Shula had left. Crazy huh?

Also note the WR with 700 something yards? 0 TD's

Keyshawn 8 TDs

Yes, because Shula would NEVER call a pass play inside the 5. Run, Run Run the A-Train.... predictable as hell.

Why would he do that though? Talent issues at WR, TE, QB?

This is literally my last post in this thread, it needs to die.

You guys keep trying to shine that turd. It doesn't work. If Shula was hired as the OC in Atlanta you all would be laughing and ripping them a new one right now.

Lets just hope that Shula has learned a great, great deal since then. Its good that the players already have a couple years in the system. That should help.

I just find it amazing how much you seem to expect that such a talent-poor Bucs offense should have been anything better than what they were. Again, they won the Super Bowl based on a vast improvement in their defense, not the offense suddenly blooming.

You still don't get it. I didn't expect a powerhouse offense in Tampa Bay, but an adequate one.

1999 - Ranked 27th.

Shula fired

2000 - Ranked 6

Thats all you really need to know. Shula was in no way maximizing on the talent level he did have.

You're basing your rankings on yards, which is ridiculous. Those 2002 Bucs were 18th in points, while the 2001 Bucs were 15th. Do you prefer to be ranked higher in scoring average or yardage average?
