How will Mike Shula change our offense?

Also it should be pointed out that Shula's offensive statistics with Shaun King playing QB were very similar to his successor who also had King as his QB.  SO that should be taken into account when people talk about the offensive improvement from his last season to his successors first season.

BTW his successor that was so successful was fired after his one season with Tampa.

I was gonna mention that but I think it had to do with the overall coaching changes. New head coach.

No.  Dungy fired him.

Despite overseeing an offense that set a team record with 388 points scored, first-year offensive coordinator Les Steckel has been fired by Tampa Bay.

"This is a hard part of the business, because it involves someone's livelihood and family," Buccaneers head coach Tony Dungy said in a prepared statement. "Les did a good job for us by evidence that we set four club records on offense, and our red-zone efficiency was one of the best in the NFL this season.

what else other than wishful thinking is there to go on to project success?

How about Chud who designed the offense and worked with Shula the past 2 years said he will do a great job and was integral to their success and  developing Newton. How about Rivera and Gettleman who interviewed all the candidates (all of whom wanted the job) and said Shula was by far the most knowledgeable about our offense and had the best plan about how to expand and develop the offense.  How about Newton, Tolbert and other players who have come out publicly and said that they are confident he will do a great job (when if they didn't agree could just have said nothing).

Yeah lets balance all that against your concerns about what he did over a decade ago in Tampa which is ancient history and denies that he has made any improvement over that time or learned anything from working with chud for the past 2 years..

Funny when you look at it objectively................

I'm failing to see how this makes a better case for shula. so the choice is either  he sucked or he was just a figurehead/puppet. neither option is attractive or a good selling point for a coach.

A figurehead/puppet may know what to do, but is handcuffed by his puppetmaster.  So if that's what was going on (and I suspect it is), then Shula may have a much better understanding of how to run an offense than we think.  And the fact is that he was a very young OC, and certainly didn't yet have the experience or voice to stand up to Dungy and try to force change.  I know when I was young and new at a job, I would listen to what my boss told me to do and just say yes sir, no matter how dumb I thought it was.  Now I have enough experience and confidence in my abilities to step up and argue my position.

And if it was simply that he just sucked, then I have reason to think he has learned something since then...if by nothing more than osmosis of being part of some good offenses since then.  But that begs the question, did he learn enough?  Only time will tell.

"Unlike last season, when Bucs general manager Rich McKay ordered Dungy to fire Mike Shula, Tuesday's move was said to be Dungy's decision alone. While McKay was consulted, a team source said McKay was surprised by the move."

This bit is also enlightening about Dungy's control of the entire team. Sixth ranked Offense, Dungy fires. Shula, bottom ranked offense, Dungy wanted to keep.

Interesting.

I think the issue of what he learned or didn't learn is overblown here. Shula was an NFL quarterback, he has worked in multiple systems, he has developed multiple quarterbacks. he has learned what to do.  He didn't have a great playbook but now he does.

Everyone  agrees that the key to the offense is Newton, not what plays we run or what we do on third on 2. The best plays on paper fail if the quarterback can't execute them on the field  Shula has a history of improving Garrard and subsequently their offense. Last year we saw him improve Newton quite a lot and was credited with helping him start so hot when he was a rookie. Other than a early season stint last year where Chud got too cute and tried to show everyone how smart he was while attempting to land a head coaching job, the offense has been prolific and much of the success goes to Shula.  What he will do with Newton to continue to develop him and help him feel comfortable in our scheme will be the key to the offense's success.

This is a pathetic thread in a long history of pathetic threads.

We have our fearless leader talking up the talent level of one of the worst offenses in history.

We have fans talking down about the offensive talent we have.

We have fans talking like 14 years doesn't change a person.....and then asking for proof.

Really????

Y'all need to put down the stupidity, and all walk away slowly.

This offense needs some balanced play calling. Chad couldn't even handle that. We're better already without him, and having someone that knows what a real run game looks like.

I know, it's a passing league.

Im not saying we won't pass, so spare me the knee jerk bulshit.

Putting points up hasn't been an issue cept when the line got hurt, and play calling got retarded.

That isn't hard to fix. Im betting shula can fix that better than most think.

The middle of our defensive line has hurt this team more than anything. For some reason, im also willing to bet it improves.

Am i pulling a full page ad is newspaper? Nope.

But im not dialing suicide hotline either.

We are having a discussion. This is what adults do when they have questions about something. We are gaining a better understaind of our offensive coordinator. No one is being stupid, quite the contrary. I see no reason for you to jump into this thread with that kind of bullshit unless you are just an asshole, which you seem to be.

But that joke about Zod was funny.

amazing how common sense gets turned into one being an asshole. While im overly qualified, y'all are doing that well enough on your own.

I've actually found out more about Shula and his past OC/HC experience in the past 2 days than I ever had through this discussion. What common sense is anyone lacking? There are questions about his past. People brought forth different ideas and argued their case. I don't understand what you are talking about. This is one of the many benefits of the Huddle.
