The great genius Ray Harryhausen has passed away.

This guy just might quietly be the most influential person in film in the last 75 years. Yes. I said 75 years.

What kid in the 70's and 80's didn't break out a Super 8 and try to make their own stop motion film?

Totally loved all of his work. Some samples:

I got to meet him in 2003, what a gracious and humble guy he was. The show I'm working at next week just announced that we're showing a bunch of his work on a super 8 mm projector Saturday night, should be a lot of fun. Look on YouTube for his test footage of the martian from War of the Worlds opening up his cylinder, pissed that the movie never got made, I'd way rather see a Harryhausen version that appeared to follow the books a little than the admittedly cool one that actually got made in the 50s.

Found out about it in 95 on a business trip and have gone back every year. Started working for them in 04. It's all about scifi and horror etc. models, effects, art, got to meet many many heroes there, and it's always a blast to be there. People come from all over the country and the world for it. Next year will be the 25th anniversary of the show.
