Dwan Edwards was shortly before training camp last year.  Ron Edwards was pretty early in FA two years ago.

The Dwan Edwards cut kinda caught him and others by surprise, as he had a pretty good camp last year. He was cut damned near the beginning of the regular season. As fate would have it, he dropped into our laps. I think we were very lucky to get him. It was an opportunistic move that was unpredictable. You can't count on moves like that every year.

I think that the staff will go into camp with what we have....evaluate the young guys....and then make decisions about adding a mid tier vet.

this...unless you're talking about training camp. they'll be able to tell where they need help well before then and there will be a good bit of good FAs hitting the market before then.

 

my hope is that they've gotten essentially the starting line-up set heading into TC and the try outs are all about depth positions.

 

imo, we need to have the starters spending training camp just getting reps together, esp. the OL. we don't need to be using that time for try outs and camp battles. where the starting line up is concerned.

I am afraid that the staff likes the young guys in the secondary.  As such, I would be surprised if we added anyone prior to training camp.  Could happen...but I would be surprised.

It does give me great pause when I read about teams in the NFL coveting CBs or new hybrid CB/safeties to cvr TEs and new spread concepts. So the tallish rookie cbs Jonathan Banks, David Amersons, Xavier Rhodes players are en vouge bc of the Seashawk's recent success.

Then I read an article where we are really excited about Drayton Florence making a major impact to our seconday of sub 5-10 guys... I really hope that pass rush is dominant!!

Back to the cap..as I have said before..professionals are at work..the cap will be fine after this season with some tough moves.

I Love Hardy(one of my fave since his college days) but if Frank Alexander develops like CJ was behind Peppers then you cannot break the bank for him. You just draft a DE and develop him behind Alexander...thus the circle of NFL cap life.

I agree you can't break the bank for guys every year, and that's why I think we should resign Hardy this year before we have to.  I like Frank, but I don't trust him to take over for CJ or Hardy yet.  Both CJ and Hardy I had faith in from their rookie seasons.  I said they were going to be at least very good starting DEs even after their rookie years when they weren't starting.  (I was slightly higher on Hardy after his rookie year than CJ, but I knew both were going to be very good).  I haven't gotten that same feeling about Frank.  I think he'll be an above average backup, a very good depth/rotational guy but I'm not getting the same vibes about him I got about CJ and Hardy.  I don't think we should count on Frank stepping in and filling Hardy's shoes, I think we should resign Hardy while we can so we don't have to worry about it.

i think the pass rush will be dominant and it will also be one that can be dominant all game with the rotation they are talking about. the DLine will continue to be the place our pass rush comes from...not blitzes...i mean blitzes will come occassionally, but for the most part all pressure on the QB will come from the front, which is fine when you have a front like ours. 

 

the pass D is going to pretty much be us running in nickel packages. we'll be running 3-3 or 4-2 formations with the secondary flooded with DBs and LBs controlling the middle. it would help to have the DBs taller, but it won't hurt much at all that they won't. QBs won't have much time to make a decision with the ball and they are going to have to keep at least one guy back blocking since we've got 3 or 4 DL on the field who demand double teams. offenses won't be able to send out 5 receiving options anymore. RBs will have to stay back and block as will a TE. they'll only be able to send out 3 or 4 receivers. i don't care how tall they are, it will be 3 or 4 receivers against 5-7 defenders and that ain't good odds if you are the offense. 

 

i don't care how tall or even how good your WRs are, the QB isn't going to have a lot of time to make that decision as to who to throw to and then to place it just right every time just over the DBs heads and they'll have to do it every time. 

 

we shouldn't need tall DBs. we shouldn't even need shut down CBs. we shouldn't even need really good DBs. we just need guys that can crowd receivers and make it hard for QBs to get a clean shot at their receivers. when they do hit their targets, it's going to be in heavy traffic and in a crowd of defenders who should be able to gang tackle the receiver so not much in the way of big gains would happen. it should cut down on the number of converted 3rd downs as well.

 

there's a whole lot of "shoulds" in there, but that's the way it is with any offense or defense. it's always a plan that should work, but sometimes doesn't.

 

considering the lack of talent in our secondary, quantity of DBs is going to have to work. to make it easier on them to succeed/not screw up, beefing up the DL and the pass rush from the front and shutting down was crucial. 

 

we could have done alright picking up another DB early in the draft, but adding star and short helps the pathetic run D we have and the pass defense at the same time.
