Breakdown of yards given up by skill position last year.

Recommended Posts

The website is blocked at work, but fftoolbox.com has the breakdowns. Just google yards allowed to TE'S, RB'S OR WR'S and it will come up.

Last year we gave up: 814 yards and 8 TD'S to T.E'S(6TH most TD's allowed and 15th most yards in NFL, only 3 teams gave up more TD's to tight ends)

2209 Yards and 12 TD's to WR'S(22 teams gave up more TD's and 27 gave up more yards)

807 Receiving yards and 2 TD'S to running backs (2nd most receiving yards allowed in the league)

Also gave up 1606 rushing yards and 10 TD's on the ground to Running backs.

That puts as dead in the middle of rushing yards allowed and tied for 16th with Oakland.

Also means 17 teams gave up more rushing TD's. 2 other teams gave up 10 rushing TD's as well.

And just for the sake of being complete we gave up 147 rushing yards to QB'S.. This is good for the 6th least amount given up.

So obviously that's way too many TD's being given up to TE's and too many receiving yards being allowed to RB's. Anyone care to take a stab at the cause of this problem and how we can fix it?

All in all, sounds pretty good. We could slow down the RBs though. If we can limit some of those huge Screen plays, that will help a poo ton.

But,,, with the depth on the D line, pressure will no long wane in the latter part of the game. Which will probably only exasperate the problem. Lots of dump offs and screens against a good pass rush.

beef up the interior Dline and strengthen the front 7.

what we've done this offseason and getting beason back will help make all of that better. the front seven is the key.

I agree. As the D line slowed down later in the game, teams started taking advantage of it. It is much easier for a good Offense to beat a tired D. Short and Star should go a long way in alleviating that problem.

An added advantage will be cleaner LBs. Less bodies in the middle of the field because they are needed in pass protection.

The way we got gashed in the run game, set up a lot of passing plays for the opposing team. Just think back to the Tampa game last year. Remember how Doug Martin gashed s in the 2nd half and OT that opened things up for Clark? Also remember how close to the LOS Keek played and how he bit hard a lot on play action because our DT's sucked?

Yeah, fixing the interior of the D-Line is going to help us a long way not only in the run game but the passing attack.

Yeah uhm it might have something to do with all three of our divisional opponents loving to go to their TE's, gotta look closer at those Tampa games but they're painful to watch.

How did Sadlanta and the Aints do on the list of TE damage? Im betting Tampa wasnt far behind us either.

edit: hmm I dunno if it matters how they did now. . . Teams had so many other ways to score on them so its kind of moot.

much of keek's stats came from having to clean up the DTs messes.

just think what he could do if he weren't having to focus his efforts on cleaning up after weak DTs.  just think of how good that D could be.

I am sure the team has all these kind of breakdowns and likely dozens more.  Lets hope that bringing in all of those free agents and our draft picks addressed some of these issues as well as a number of others like giving up playing a soft zone and giving up way too many passing third downs, failing to be stout in third and short and so forth. Plus my subjective opinion was that we were more stout in the last 4 games versus earlier in the year.  That is until late when we went back to a soft zone and gave up a number of tds and plenty of yards.

a small part of the TE thing is scheme.  It's inevitable that the middle's going to be a little more open.

That said, facing Graham and Gonzalez twice is just a fact that, for another year, the team will have to endure.
