More Names Being Thrown Around (Hornets Coaching Search Thread)

Recommended Posts

I'm just not feeling many, if any, of these names out there.

Gentry is okay, but he just seems like a stop-gap.  Everyone else seems like eventual wash outs.

Is it me, or is the coaching pool for the NBA extremely diluted and shallow nowadays.

F*ck, call Don Nelson out of retirement.

You're not alone in that. Whoever we hire will probably be fired in 2-3 years, which is considered a dynasty in bobcat franchise history.

Sadly, 2 to 3 years would be a MAJOR improvement.

I really don't know what to think about all of this. Part of me would like a coach whose been successful previously like Sloan but there are no guarantees. Winning in basketball like most sports comes down to having a solid general manager, drafting the right players, signing the right guys in free agency, etc. I am questioning our front office more and more and wondering if anybody we hire is going to matter, because the right pieces aren't there to create a winner.

  • Quinn Snyder played PG at Duke and was a asst. under Coach K.
  • Very smart guy, graduated w/ double major from duke, received JD from Duke law school, and a MBA from Duke business school. Considered a pick and roll guru and has published articles on the evolution of the pick and roll. Would be a offensive minded coach.
  • First head coaching job was with mizou. Did a very good job, but resigned because a handful of minor NCAA violations.
  • got back into coaching in the d-league w/ austin torros(2007-2010) Won championships with them.
  • Develope coach with 76ers, Asst. coach under Lakers. Went to Moscow w/ other asst. coach that took head job.
  • Suns, 76ers, and Bobcats are giving him extensive looks
He would be a good hire. Was the frontrunner last year until Dunlap cockblocked him for the job.

You forgot to add "disgraced college coach" to that list.

He got Mizzou in big time trouble that they've only recently recovered from.

Sampson fits the "disgraced college coach" description as well.

Maybe even more so than Snider. Look how long it took Indiana to recover from that mess he left up there. And Indiana is one of the premiere college basketball programs in the country. Certainly top 5. No offense to any Missouri fans but no one is going to confuse Mizzou basketball with Hoosier basketball.

I have a feeling that we aren't going to hire a guy like Gentry (someone who is well known). It's not necessarily a bad thing, though, as long as they make the right hire this time. I really wish that we would've just kept Dunlap for one more season, because I didn't think that he did all that bad (made mistakes, but helped us improve a lot from last season as well). He wasn't the right coach, though, so I suppose that if we were going to look for another coach soon, we may as well do it now and let him grow with our young roster.

You think he is gonna get the bobcats in trouble with the NCAA?

Sampson was one of the hottest, most intriguing college basketball coaches 10 years ago. They don't just had the keys to anybody at Indiana. He is unscrupulous and has never proven he can be a HC in the NBA. There's a reason he has been buried on an NBA bench and hasn't gone back to a college job. No school wants to touch him. He isn't Calipari or even Bruce Pearl.
