CREDIBILITY WATCH: David Gettleman

Recommended Posts

Remember too that he used Hurney's old scouting/personnel staff since we were already in the middle of the draft analysis when he was hired. Let's see who he keeps and who he brings in for next season. We should know soon how satisfied he was with the current staff and if he starts all over with his people.

+1 cred for Ted Ginn

+1 cap management

+1 for Star

-1 for the rest of the draft

imo

wow critical thinking at its finest.

Cap Management: took us down to 5 million from being over 16 million by cutting some players who are not worth their contract (Beason/ DeAngelo aside since it would be detrimental or even against our cap). Signed many CB's/Safeties to compete with the limited money we have with our core of young players. Upgraded our return game in Ginn and Barnes. Signed a quality reciever in Hixon who can battle for the #2 with Lafell. Pushing our receivers. Signed blackburn, a Giants fan favorite. Most of these players signed to one year contracts (great even if this was a league wide phenomenon)

The Draft: Followed his philosophy that he has stated multiple times. Drafted BPA in every round based on what the Panthers organization thought.

Star- No brainer (ran to the podium for the pick)

Short- Best pass rushing DT in the draft (awesome pick) Hunter was gone so it's understandable.

Kugbila - Probably the most controversial pick - Huge upside/ Top D1 football recruit. Seems like a hungry/ hard working guy. I think in the long run this will be a huge addition. Who knows though. People bitched about Barrett Jones being available. He is really light for a guard at the next level/ injury prone. Doesn't seem to have the frame to add more weight to be that 320 that Kugbila is.

Klein - Great Depth especially with our fragile star LB (Beason and Davis). Dude can play, smart, instinctive, electric, fiery. Like Kuechly but not as athletic.

Barner - Steal of the draft imo. We get an insanely athletic, quick scatback type player to compliment Stewart. I expect DeAngelo to be gone by the latest next year. Especially considering the cuts Gettleman has made to Gamble, Anderson, ect.

Some people were very dissapointed in rounds 4,5,6. And i can get that. We picked a high potential guard, a LB, and a RB. Seems crazy considering the depth/needs of other positions. But if you wanna build championships you have to take the BPA, you cannot reach for needs. I wanted certain players like Rambo in the 4th, 5th, or 6th but i trust Gettleman who has worked in pretty much every single position in an NFL organization over someone who sits at home and watches some games and some youtube clips.

Gettleman has done everything he has said he would do and he has already made this team better in year 1. I'm excited about our future draft picks, our cap management, and his complete overhaul of the bottom portions of our team. He will make this team talented from top to bottom. I really believe that.

Added bonus

We already have pieces to compete. Cam, CJ, Kraken, Luke, Kalil, ect. It shouldn't take as long as some people think. Next year I think we add those WR playmakers for Cam. When we do, and if they pan out, we will be deadly.

Until Gettleman proves he can't get the job done. Then I believe he is doing his job. We will start to see Gettleman results starting this season. If we go 10-6 or 11-5 for that fact with the schedule we have and make to the playoffs and go deep into it. Then Gettleman has done more then good in my book. But even if we go 9-7 and missed the playoffs again. This still show Gettlmen got the job done. But Ron might be gone tho.

Exactly. You look at what he did in FA, then in the draft, and there is a clear plan at work here. Most of FA was spent on secondary and WR. If people were expecting us to go into the draft spending half of our picks on secondary and WRs, it would completely undermine the work he did in FA and what he said he was going to do. If people don't trust what he did in FA then that's their prerogative, but if anything that's what he's proven himself most capable at in his last job. I think given the shitstorm of a cap he inherited, he worked FA and the draft about as well as anyone could expect a man to.

Yup. And another thing. Pure opinion, but I believe 2-3 seasons down the road he will bring in big name free agents if the price is right and they fit. He couldn't do that this year and worked great with what he had.

Let's see. Far as I know Hurney was never a scout. He had scouts working for him to give him the best info on who draft every year. Dave Gettleman on the other hand was one of the top scouts with the Giants for years and one of the best scouts in the NFL. Therefore Gettleman a long with Hurney leftovers. Gettlemen is probably teaching Hurney scouts how to really get the job done. Gettleman is a true scout for many years while Hurney was a front office jackass who got promoted. While Hurney didn't do a terrible job. It wasn't great neither. Gettleman knows a lot more to look for then Hurney did. Point blank.

Really no way for us to judge.

Did he improve our cap situation? I guess. Could someone else have done better? Maybe.

He stuck to his plan by filling holes via free agency? We'll see how those players pan out.

He went BPA in the draft? It appears so but by his board. Star was a gimmee, we probably won't know for a year or two on the others.

You can have your opinion but there's no way to know yet.

he approached FA in a way that enabled him to draft BPA. He brought a lot to speacial teams especially the return game. Every thing he said he would do he did. He drafted the best available player according to his scouting at each pick in the draft. Our wants did not factor in his decision making, and that tells me he is on the right track. A++ just for being honest open and having a damn plan. oh, and we got star. :)
