Anyone catch Smitty this afternoon?

Marc James is a complete douche bag. He has a lot of nerve with amount of sht he talks about the players and then has the balls to invite them on his show.

It's astounding all the crap he said about Cam needing to mature with Smitty right there beside him as if James is there next to Cam in the meetings, in the locker room, in the huddle. Total ass clown.

i think that was more of a knee jerk defensive reaction on your part.

i do think he wants to cut back the amount that cam runs, which is understandable. cutting it all out...nah.

here's what he said:

now is that wrong?

he did say that was something that rivera would be making the call on and he also said that he wanted to see a downhill running game, a vertical offense, and play action. he also said that the read option would still be an option...just not the base. i just don't see the problem. the goal is to make cam more well rounded as a QB, which is something he wants to be, isn't it? didn't he want to not be labeled as a running QB?

i saw this quote from chud recently about newton...

you look at the way cam has talked about his goals being a QB what gettleman is doing is trying to create a way for him to be that and win. it's not a desire to move on from cam or even necessarily limit him to just being a pocket passer anymore than some want to limit him to being a read option/running QB.

cam wants to be a complete dominant QB and he wants respect. he knows that it's going to come from his ability to be a good passer as well as all the other elements.

cam has to be able to win from the pocket. he has to develop that aspect even further than he has and you can tell from the work he's done that it is important to him. from his earliest interviews you can tell he wants to do what the great pocket passers can do. he wants to be great and respected as a pocket passer, but he doesn't want to be limited by it nor will he be. and he shouldn't be limited by being a running QB, nor does he want to be. he wants to do what the great pocket passers can do and more.

cutting back on the read option stuff isn't going to cut back on his ability to make things happen and exploit holes in defenses. cutting back on the amount of times he runs isn't a bad thing. it could open things up for when he runs. you make teams respect that arm and that passing game and they can't focus their efforts on him. it also takes a lot of pressure on him to spread the load of productivity to others and it cuts back on the chances he has of getting injured and/or wearing down. he's got other talented ball carriers and he's got several receivers that don't suck...why not use them more than his rushing ability? why should we be so focused on his ability to run the ball instead of just trying to create a well balanced team that can kill defenses three ways from tuesday?

it's no slight on cam. it's no disrespect. it's just trying to make the team the best it can be, not cam a superstar running QB.

Reality is Gettlemen probably got in my dog house as a certain group of posters took his words twisted them....and then tried to argue Cam should play like Eli, not run, and that Gettlemen had ruled out the read option as an option.

Not so much him, but me allowing him to be more of what some where claiming he was about

And I think the only thing missing from Cam's game is his short pass game and simply experience that can only come from years put in. I am now leaning toward him being part of the goaline/short yardage rush attack being almost completely removed....the rest of his running I think will be in his game pretty much forever. It may vary how he does it....but I still maintain all Young's rushing stats will be shattered.

and lets not act like he would admit if he really thought the draft was bad.

...mmmmmmm, I don't know. I usually agree with most of which you post DCK, but I think Smith would indeed show his ass if he didn't like this draft. He usually speaks his mind regardless of audience.

Marc James wouldn't want Cam. I think he has this disdain for Cam and didn't think he would be good when we drafted him so he is trying to hang on to that so he isn't perceived as wrong. He blames Cam for our loses and always points back to Cam not having a winning record as a QB in the NFL, all of this while fawning over Luck and giving him full credit for all of the Colts wins. Same thing with RG3 and Andy Dalton he points to their "winning records" even though this is a team sport and there are 3 different sides of the ball and the QB is only 1 piece of that.

Many other so called "experts" like him did the same, declaring Cam a bust before he was even drafted. All the while touting mediocre prospects such as Blaine Gabbert and Jake Locker. It must hurt to be so embarrassingly dead wrong.

i don't understand the cam running worries, he is probably the only qb i can remember for a while who slides to avoid contact, even if its a possibility he could break it, if a defender is near he's sliding. he gets more beaten up standing in the pocket then actually running

Smith normally doesn't show his ass until in a football environment...wait until they put on pads and they start working. If he is going to share he real thoughts he has to near a field or working

Trying to stay in the pocket too long is gonna get him hurt....he is the opposite of your typical mobile player. He rarely runs unless it is a called part of the play

No but sorry, yes he does. Smith shows his ass in malls, on the radio, in Hawaii, on NFL Network, you name it.

We will have to agree to disagree.

He has no love-loss at WFNZ. Half of that team is dead to him.

I'll let you guess who he has no respect for.

Agree with this completely. I think you misunderstood Gettleman or like you said posters twisted his words. Cam needs and wants to be the complete package deal. We have something very special. From the small sample I have seen, this guy can make throws that top QBs can make, can run better than some of the best running QBs that have ever played the game and can be as hard to tackle as Big Ben. We need the whole package, every element, because Cam has shown flashes of all of them, and if/when he puts it all together it will be a scary thing. This isn't homerism, this is what I have witnessed in phases. And this is what is so exciting about this guy.

His short game is nothing to sneeze at either, it's not as awful as some people say. But he defintely needs to get better. And i was gonna post earlier the only thing I wanted taken from his running game was his short yardage red zone carries, where he would obviously receive the most hits.

Ok, agree to disagree....from what I have seen Smith is a VERY calm, intelligent, compassionate, and frankly nice guy in the offseason...with no drama. In fact, I cant think of one instance he has done or said anything except for PC junk or painfully obvious stuff in an offseason.

He doesn't show his ass except starting in Wofford uo until Carolina plays its last game of the season. Then he talks to the media with his emotions, shows out, etc.
