Scouting Report – OG Edmund Kugbila

I dig these DraftPanthers guys and they gave me a free shirt, so I pimp them out a little. Note: I can be bought.

A lot of puzzled looks streamed across Panther Nation with the 4th round selection of Valdosta State OG Edmund Kugbila. We knew, based on our perception of David Gettleman’s likely Draft Strategy, that a high potential prospect from a small school was likely to be taken in the 3rd or 4th round. We did not connect the pre-draft visit dots and see Kugbila as the possible pick.

It is impossible to know where every team graded Kugbila. The NFL Network Broadcast team did not call the pick a reach. In fact, Charles Davis and Mike Mayock indicated that coaches around the league liked Kugbila’s potential and were very excited about him as a prospect.

Kugbila’s size (6’4″ – 317), length (34 – 7/8 arms) and lateral movement skills (4.65 20-yd shuttle) make him a very intriguing prospect. To put these measurable aspects into perspective consider that Kugbila is bigger than the #7 pick OG Chance Warmack and had a 20-yard shuttle time better than #2 overall pick OT Luke Joeckel (4.68) and just behind the #18 pick OG Justin Pugh and the #19 pick OG Kyle Long (both timed at 4.63).

Teams that worked him out had him much higher than the generic report grade filler stuff. Thats where the discrepancy with this kid is. They just could not get over the small school stuff, which can be fair to a point. The panthers however are positioned particularly well what it takes to get an OL from a small school into the starting lineup.

Now whether they could get him in the 5th I dunno, one could argue value here, Problem is panthers were not the only team high on him.

As for guard vs cb, safety shees, we already have a roster filled with low drafted guys like captain. Do we want yet another or are we going to wait until we really can make a difference?

I would rather have Kugbila/Silatolu type, who granted will have an adjustment period to the NFL due to level of competition and learning proper technique but have pro bowl potential, versus a guy like Barrett Jones that's probably hit his ceiling who, at best, will be an average starter In the NFL.

Draftinsider.net gives a very impresive review.

Bio: Three-year starter awarded all-America and all-Conference honors the past two years.

Positive: Large, athletic offensive lineman with a huge upside. Bends his knees, blocks with leverage, and stays square. Jolts defenders with terrific hand punch, turns them from the action, or easily out positions opponents from the play. Moves well on his feet, displays the ability to slide in space and easily steers defenders from the action in pass protection. Flashes power in his lower body and drives defenders off the ball run blocking. Quick out to the second level, can readjust to linebackers, and hit a moving target. Massive and tough to get around.

Negative: Plays back on his heels and does not show a killer instinct. Must improve his blocking balance. A bit haphazard in his movement.

Analysis: Kugbila is a large, athletic lineman with the strength required for a power running offense and movement skills to line up in a zone-blocking scheme. He possesses tremendous upside but needs to improve the details of his position and pick up his all-around intensity. If he pulls it all together and is coached properly, Kugbila possesses starting potential for the next level.

this was my favorite pick after star. according to the browns beat writer he had a 3rd or 4th round grade on him.

The Browns will conduct a private workout this weekend with Valdosta (Ga.) State guard Edmund Kugbila, a league source told the Plain Dealer today.

Kugbila (6-4, 362) is expected to go in the third or fourth round.

He's started the past three seasons, and is known for his aggressive demeanor on the field. Kugbila helped Valdosta to the Division II national championship last season.

The Browns are looking for depth at guard, and a possible starter depending on the health of Jason Pinkston (blood clot in lung).

They've studied other top guards, including Kent State's Brian Winters and North Carolina's Jonathan Cooper.
