Drafting Need vs BPA

Just thought this was interesting. The case for BPA over need:

If we try to draft for need over the past 2 years we likely have something like:

DT Fletcher Cox

DT Devon Still

S Kenny Vacarro

WR Aaron Dobson/CB Jamar Taylor

Couple of solid guys with a couple guys with decent potential.

By drafting BPA over the past 2 years we have:

LB Luke Kuechly

G Amini Silatolu

DT Star Lotulelei

DT Kawann Short

A LB who appears to be a star and a G with potential to be a key cog on the OL to go along with two DTs with tremendous potential.

I share this for two reasons. One to show that I think our Front Office is doing a great job at picking stars. I would much rather have the second group over the first.

Secondly, this is for all the guys that are upset about not filling out the secondary or WR corps. These are probably the same people that were upset about not filling out the DL last year. While Cox and Still (among others) are guys who could be solid contributors, by not settling on them to fill out the roster we have a superstar LB and two other DTs who can become studs (plus Amini!). We could have easily filled the DB and WR holes we supposedly have with average talent guys but that limits us from getting better players at other positions and from filling those spots in the future with better players.

Granted we didn't always draft for need. But this year it's not like we didn't draft BPA vs Need, it weighed between the two. We will need to replace Deangelo next season, we need a RG, we needed an UT for the future in Short, and we needed a NT who could take double teams in Star.

I know everyone gets pissed that we didn't take a WR but I'm not going to act like I know the team better than Dave Gettleman. There is something up their sleeve at WR, he knows something we don't about the guys we have.
