Should we switch to a 3-4

Recommended Posts

Every body's sayin that we ain't got depth at dt which we don't and that good olb's are easier to find then good dt's which they are...so y not switch to a 3-4

Because in a 3-4, the front three have to be solid and big enough to consistantly take on double teams. Outside of Kemo and possibly Peppers, who else would fit that billing?

Besides, we are going to a Tampa 2 defense where speed, not size, is the preferred attribute.

We are built almost completely opposite for a 3-4 defense.

I love the 3-4, and I can understand you asking the question.

However, this team has quite a few high draft picks that would not translate over to the 3-4 all that easily. Not to mention we have some very good 4-3 players. Davis, Lewis, Beason, Peppers, Brown (hopefully)...etc....

Have you guys ever heard of the saying if ain't broke don't fix it. Are defense is not broke, it was a little sketchy at times with Trgo, at the controls, but we were far from a terrible defense. Everyone likes to point out how bad the defense performs, but not how bad the offense performed. All the teams that do well in the league have a defense that performs well for a good offense. No one wants to go back out on the field after they just came out. The Steelers, Patriots, Giants, Chargers, Ravens, Titans, and sometimes the Panthers and Colts are examples of teams that do somewhat well on both sides of the ball. The defense will perform if the offense will perform, which was shown in a couple of games this season against the Falcons: Score 24-9, Chiefs: Score 34-0, Saints: Score 30-7, Bucs: Score 38-23, Broncos: Score 30-10. In these 5 games, our offense gained 2,042 yards, while our defense only allowed 1,401 yards. Also in these 5 games our offense had 5 turnovers, while our defense had 7 takeaways. I promise you if the offense shows up then the defense will show up, and vice versa.

Wouldn't be suprised to possibly see some formations that mimic the 3-4 with the edge rushers we have i.e Brown, Taylor, Peppers and Charles Johnson. We have at least 3 DT's that could help us pull this off in Brayton, Kemo and the rookie Irvin. Sort of like a hybrid formation, similar to what New England does.

With that said, Fox has always preferred the 4-3 scheme, and this will always be our base formation. His conservative style and our current personnel pretty much guarantees we won't be deviating that much from this system, if at all, as long as he's at the helm.
