Panthers sign Melvin White..

Recommended Posts

As a Panthers and Cajuns fan, heres a little bit of insight on him. Last year, he was depended on heavily in the secondary after Dwight Bentley went into the draft (3th rounder to Lions, was going to be a starter for them before a preseason injury sidelined him). He is a bigger guy and has a frame to fill out to be a Safety which is a better position for him because the guy likes to hit, a lot. In his time in college, he was a good character guy and stepped into the senior leadership role this past season. He is an intensely hard worker which is a trait that has been instilled with the coach at Louisiana right now. I always felt he did better in man covereage as opposed to zone, and that will probably be his biggest area needed to improve.

If you were going to get a DB from a non-BCS school, you chose the right school. UL has had a number of legitimate pros over the past 10 or so years playing in defensive backfields. The Cajuns have produced Michael Adams (nickelback for Arizona), CC Brown (Played safety for the Texans for a few seasons), Antwann Spann (provided Safety depth for the Patriots a few years ago), Dwight Bentley (Mentioned earlier, 3rd round pick for Lions last season), Ike Taylor (Pittsburgh), and Charles Tillman (Any explination needed?). I'm not saying that White will have that kind of success, but the school does have a pedigree of producing pro talent in defensive backfields.

Lastly, please don't call the college Lafayette. Lafayette is a college in Pennsylvania. Louisiana (UL Lafayette, which is what we go by academically) is located in Lafayette Louisiana. It's my love for that school that got me following the Panthers when Jake Delhomme went to Carolina, and I refused to ever go back and pull for the Taints.
