Drafting Dwan's replacement

In 2015 Dwan will be a UFA and he will also be 34 years old.

We will be struggling to stay under the cap after paying Cam a record breaking deal.

Short will still be on a second round rookie salary.

This was absolutely a smart, long term thinking move. Gettleman saw first hand that winning franchises shore up their lines well in advance and do not struggle to fill gaps with aging overpaid veterans which appeared to be Hurney's (losing) philosophy..

I get the logic and Gettleman's philosophy.

But we could have also drafted a CB or S or OL and maybe drafted a DT again next year in the first.

Gettleman seems to be locked on the Hog-Molly thing which may be a sound philosophy. But there isn't one catch all solution to developing a winning team. Yes many playoff teams have great lines. Many of them also have studs in the secondary.

and Steve Smiths replacement? Gross? a little more important than a DT

All three need to be addressed, but I don't agree that one's more important than the other. Hopefully, we solidified the interior defensive line for a few years. Now we need to work on the other areas, either in free agency or in the remainder of this draft or next year's draft. Its a process, you can't fix it all at once.

isn't that what their trying to do with the dline? why not spread the wealth. not like we were stockpiled with picks.

I said it multiple times, outside of the sack numbers Dwan was rated terribly by PFF. It was a terrific pick.

That's because even though he got good pressure, that was negated because he got gashed in the run game. Part of that too was we didn't have a consistent 1 tech next to him, so his glaring weakness was accentuated.

I like the Short pick as well. Not just long term but short term as well.

Valid, however I don't think the salary cap struggles will be what they are today as most of Hurney's stupidity should be purged from the books by then.

Cam will get paid however though, he'll be a 20 mill per year cap hit.

It's gonna be great to be a Panther fan in terms of success here very shortly.

There was no one at our 2nd rd pick that would replace our starting LT....and doubtful to replace our #1 WR.

I hope that you are right. But at some point wether this year or next year you need to start drafting some offense. besides Cam its been all defense.

I get what you are saying. I was questioning the pick too but now I love it. The reason being is because one of the best ways to make an impact on defense is to simply dominate the line of scrimmage. With Kawaan Short and Star on the roster our defensive line across the board is stacked. The rotation behind the starters is now stacked as well.

Say we don't take Short, Dwan goes down. We still have 3 good starters on that line but they are now easier to scheme against and block and easier to expose the secondary. I'm not convinced that any safety or CB we could have taken would have suddenly made our secondary that much better.

DJ Moore, Captain, Norman, and Thomas are all quality #2/#3 corner backs despite the sht that is talked on this board. And now with the over powering talent we have on the defensive line, these guys should be able to do quite well. I think Mitchell and Campbell will turn out to be decent safety's once TC brings the best out of them. I'm expecting Chris Harris/Marlon McCree level play out of those two.
