Smart teams vs dumb teams

Last night you could easily see who they were. The cowboys and the jets probably being the most visible. The panthers on the other hand showed they were a very smart team helmed by taking the best dt on the board that fits out scheme perfectly and fills up a huge need position. I think we out in a new era and it's clear as day to see this franchise is already headed in the right direction. Although our pick kinda got overshadowed by Vikings and rams having a million first picks I think ours was one of the top picks homerism aside. Winners and losers on round one?

Vikings get an A+ (although think Hunter is better than Patterson for them)

Jets get a D (they get a worse corner in exchange of Revis) and missed on the best DT on the board

Bills get a ? three years from now they are going to look like geniuses, or razorcakes

Screw the Pats

Panthers A (got lucky catching a falling Star)

The Cam Newton's, Russell Wilson's, and RGIII's of the NFL really pressured Buffalo into making that pick. Remember that botched conference call with Mark Dominik and Buddy Nix? Nix was adamant about finding a QB this offseason. I just think he jumped on a guy that was graded as a late 2nd/early 3rd round pick....could really burn them.

They easily could have waited and still ended up with at least Barkley smith Manuel or nassib. They fuged up on that one

why are the jets stupid?

from a talent stand point they got two good players. Milliner's injury history is over blown and half this board would have been happy with richardson if Star had gone where he should have. Yeah they probably shouldn't have traded Revis in the first place but the owner wanted him gone and that decision has to be viewed as a sunk cost at this point.

The Cowboys traded down and upgraded their center position, and if you've ever watched a cowboys game you know snapping the ball is a massive problem for them.

The worst draft picks of the night, besides the Bills taking EJ Manuel, were the Saints and 49ers.

The niners didn't need to trade up for Eric fuging Reid. He had the highest catch percentage against of all draft eligible safeties this year. I don't really care how much Harbaugh wanted him to come to Stanford. That was a reach for a player with very limited range and tackling issues.

The Saints poo the bed the worst. Vaccaro fuging sucks. They basically just got a Roman Harper clone with a massive upgrade at DT sitting right in front of them.

It was actually a pretty good draft if you hate other teams in the NFC South, since the Falcons traded up and passed on Floyd as well. They still don't have pass rush.

Nothing has changed as far as drafting in the first round goes. We all see Star as the guy. The true test begins tonight. Will we finally draft a starter after the first round?

they've drafted plenty what are you talking about

I would have given them an A+ until they traded 4 picks to get patterson

Didn't like that either, but as others have pointed out, the Patriots could be chided for that too.

The Pats haven't really drafted as well as their media reputation would lead you to think. They've definitely had some hits (Gronkowski, for example) but the whole "trade down " thing has gotten to the point where I think it's the Pats believing their own press.

Belichick really seems to believe he's so smart that he can find players in later rounds that he can turn into Pro Bowl level starters. Thus, they trade down with an eye toward doing just that. Occasionally it works, but for some of their drafts, it's backfired.

    • i think i go in the opposite direction of most. my ideal retirement is living in some old downtown area in a flat above some shop or something.  life out in the country was just something i got real tired of. My kids actually miss some of living out there, which i understand. that was where they grew up for the most part. 40 acres with a 2.5 acre pond. it was beautiful, but also way too much (and too expensive) for me to keep up with.
    • FLASHBACK: I remember back when ESPN was just starting--he was their anchor.  They used to show stuff like Rodeo and field hockey--I remember laughing when he went to a commercial mocking a cycling competition in Utah (or something similar--I made that up) and I laughed.  I told my dad, "We may have us a new anchor when we get back from commercial."  When they came back from commercial, Berman was looking very serious and he said, "Any comments by me do not reflect the views of ESPN....The men and women who cycle are dedicated athletes and we are honored to shine light on their sport." (Paraphrasing).  Dad laughed hysterically. My first memory of him--and that was like 1980.
    • Might not have a team without them. Although that probably applies to the Panthers, too.
