Should we try to get into the third, and, if so, how do we do it?

Not saying that I think that we should or would do it, but being that this year has some players that have the possibility to possibly to start for us in the 3rd at WR, Safety and/or CB, should we be thinking of a way to get back into the third at this point?

I don't know which way we're going to go with this second pick, but I have a suspicion that guys like Ryan Swope, Kenny Stills, Bacarri Rambo, Shamarko Thomas, Tyrann Mathieu, David Amerson and Sanders Commings---just to name a few----will be there, ripe for the picking in the 3rd. Being that you have what appears to be great upside to some of these players this year, is it worth say giving up next year's 2nd to get up into the 3rd this year (or some other price, tbd)?

I doubt it happens, but I was just thinking about it. What do you think?

Doubtful. We'd have to give up too much. DeAngelo + a 5th or something like it. This draft is deep enough at our positions of need that we can survive without a 3rd, luckily.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if we take Ryan Swope in the 2nd, though, since you mentioned him. He's going to go earlier than a lot of mocks have had him going, IMO.

The Evil Empire just got 4 more picks (in this draft, I believe). I think one of those picks is going to be Swope, so if we want him, we'd have to go get him. Problem is, I don't think we even worked him out, so no way I think that we pick him. TBH, I don't see him going before the third, and some of it may be due to stereotypical notions (though I can justify Hunter, Allen, Woods, Dobson and maybe a couple of others going before him).

That's easy to say, but you would have to look at the perceived value this year against perceived value next year, so it's not like it's an outlandish thought. That being said (like I already said), I doubt that we do it, especially with G-man at the helm.

What? So let's say you are an incoming GM who is already having to clean up not only a roster but a salary cap disaster right off the bat. You also only have 5 picks thanks to the previous GM. So your first draft in you are going to mortgage the future and get trade happy? I just do not see it. Atleast not from a professional like our guy.

I'm not a GM, but I'd think you have to keep your options open. The salary cap is a non-issue in regards to the draft---if anything it helps you out with the salary cap. In any event, it's all about perceived value and needs, and your overall perception of the state of your team. If you feel you're close to getting where you need to be in the immediate, then you may be more willing to pull the trigger. But, like I said, I don't think we do it.

We should just stay with what we have, like others have said...I look forward to having a full slate of picks next year.

Next year will be the first time in forever that we've had a full arsenal of picks.

So picking up a 3rd would require either trading back from our current position in the second, trading away next years draft picks, or trading a current player on the roster.

1. Trading back in the second is an interesting option. The middle of the second is usually considered a bubble period where the draft is starting to run low on starting caliber players. With the depth in this years draft, this could be a possibility.

2. Trading future picks (2013), bundling our 4th, 5th, or 6th. We don't have much to work with here, but I suppose if there is a player we really want in the 3rd Starter > camp fodder

3. I hope the idea of trading away next years draft picks is out of the question. One thing I have learned, when the Panthers trade away future picks, it NEVER works out in our favor. some of our best moves were made when trading back (Beason + Kalil), not up (Armanti Edwards, Everette Brown, etc)

4. Trading a current player on the roster? I don't know who we have to trade. Our RB's? I believe that would hurt us financially. Jimmy Clausen? If only Mel Kiper was a GM

Pretty sure the days of the Panthers War Room being a trading post are over.

Gettleman doesn't seem to be inclined to trade up or down.

It's especially unlikely in a draft where you have fewer picks, and I doubt giing away future picks is an option.

I say YES, if there is someone we really like. Maybe a Quinton Patton or Da'Rick Rogers is there. Move up and take him.
