I'm not sure how many times that you people need to be told this, tackles for a DT are a throw away stat, means nothing. 10.5 TFL and 4 sacks for a "pass rushing" DT who is sub par vs. the run is not elite. Good yes, elite, no.

Tackles are definitely not a throw away stat for a DT. Maybe for the secondary it is. But players in the front 7 making tackles is there job. Special for a DT. That means he never gave up on a play and chase ball carriers down. Again were talking about a DT doing this.

Means nothing, chase down tackles from the backside are impressive. Those tackles mean that he is a good football player and has a good motor, does not make him a great DT.

50 tackles is a great season for an NFL DT. Kris Jenkins's season high was 50 tackles. Haloti Ngata is considered one of the very best D-linemen in the NFL. He had 33 tackles last year. More often than not, a DT's job is to occupy blockers or generally create havoc and allow the other guys to clean up the mess.

That's not necessarily to say that tackles are a throw away stat for DTs, but they definitely don't tell the full story.

Take Short for example who has a much more impressive stat line and is far better vs. the run. Short is productive, but is not the same kind of athlete that Richardson is, give me production over athleticism any day.

Short has 30 less tackles 4.5 more TFL 3 more sacks 4 PD and 2 less FF.

All while playing in a weaker conference against lesser competition.

When did Short have to face players like Warmack, Warfield or Barret Jones?

Warford, who owned Richardson. Everyone knows that the Big 10 produces some of the top OL talent in the NFL. Sure, this year is a down year for their talent draft wise, but lets be real here.

Dude led the team in tackles. The story is other players weren't doing their jobs.

I'm a UM fan but there is no comparison in the talent this year between the SEC and the Big 10. And this is all we have to compare.

Richardson played against better competition and had almost even production.

whattttt big difference between the meaningful stats of TFL and sacks, and even if it was even production (which it is not) one prospect is being billed as a top 20 guy and the other a mid 2nd rounder. Again, production is not even close to being even, who can't get 4 sacks? If you say that is even production, then Byron Jerideau's 5.5 TFL and 2.5 sacks is almost even production with Richardson.

So the 30 tackle difference means nothing right??????

So 3 more sacks and 4.5 more TFL (against lesser competition) means more then the "30" more tackles.

Yes......what don't you get about the tackle thing man. The TFL and sacks are much more relevant to DT play than tackles. fuging tackles...are you serious????????? It shows hustle and athleticism, that is it. The tackles have NOTHING to do with quality DT play. They show non stop motor and will, I will concede that leading the team in tackles is impressive. But it does not translate to ability to play the DT position, sorry.

I don't care about that stupid made up Idea that tackles for a DT is a throw away stat. That's some of the stupidest poo I've ever heard.

This isn't like the secondary where if a CB has a lot of tackles that means he given up a lot of rec.

This is a player who is the closest to the line of scrimmage and to the guys (who's job is to keep him away from the ball carrier). Actual getting to the ball carrier more then anybody on his team.

Like I said the the sacks are good and the TFL are good. But the 30 more tackles are just as good. Plus they came against better competition.
