Mel Kiper stands by his assessment of Jimmy Clausen

The ESPN draftnik showdown between Mel Kiper and Todd McShay regarding the fate of Jimmy Clausen ended with McShay scoring a slam-dunk victory. McShay predicted that Clausen wouldn’t be a top-ten pick; eventually, Clausen wasn’t a top-40 selection. (Rosenthal, by the way, predicted that The Golden Calf of Bristol would be picked before Clausen. Under the terms of our wager, I’m required to mention that once per week for the remainder of my natural life, plus 21 years.)

But Kiper is sticking to his guns. “I had him as the fourth-best player,” Kiper said in a post-draft conference call. “That’s my rating. That’s my opinion, and I’ll stand by it. We’ll see what happens three years from now.”

A lot can, and will, happen in three years. With Clausen picked by a team coached by a duck who scheduled his millennium party for 2001, the former Notre Dame quarterback could get lost in the shuffle if/when the Panthers have a new coach who doesn’t share Kiper’s assessment.

Clausen helps cause with impressive pro day workout

SOUTH BEND, Ind — At Jimmy Clausen‘s workout on Friday, I saw pretty much what I expected to see.

I’ve probably seen about 10 of his games on tape, and I felt like I knew what the kid was. What he didn’t do on tape during the season is that he didn’t transfer his weight from the right side of his body to his left side, and that was readily apparent on tape.

I saw the weight transfer today, and I asked him later on if it was because of the toe injury. He said, “Absolutely, Mike. I couldn’t push off the right side and I got into some bad habits during the season.”

I enjoyed meeting the kid and talking with him. I’ve said all along, that from a physical skill-set perspective, he’s a top-10 pick. But you have to buy into the kid; you either like the kid, or you don’t like the kid. In my first prolonged opportunity to sit down with him, I think he’s into football, I think he has a passion for the game. Now you have to figure out what his work ethic is and how much he loves the game.

The questions I have: Is he a leader of men, or, over a period of time, is he going to wear on people? Or is he going to take a step up to the next level and lead somebody to a Super Bowl? Therein lies the whole thing. I buy into the skill set. Now you have to buy into the kid.

Why are we arguing this? They said the same thing and you said Mayock is the Skip Bayless of drafting. Kiper is the one that uses theatrics and bold statements. Mayock just states his opinion.

I think I'll stick with ESPN because I watched the last two drafts with them and the last two drafts we selected two rookie of the years. No sense in changing it up now...here's to three rookie of the years in a row.
