Sheldon Richardson (yes again)

I'm just like the next guy, I'd like for nothing more than for us to prove Kiper and McShay's mock drafts wrong. They've had the guy going to us since mock draft 0.1 or so it seems. I'd love for us to make a splash in a new way with the new GM... But then I ask myself at what expense?

We have a need at DT, and imo, this dudes as solid as they come. He plays with freakish like energy, and honestly the thought of his energy mixed with a little Kracken, and mixed with a Lil CJ makes me salivate quite frankly. Set Luke, Davis, and Beaston free to roam around and lay some wood!

I know there has been some love and hate thrown towards the guy... And I know we all pretty much hate the mock draft guys... So all of that aside, if we do end up taking him, are u really gonna be mad?

Why should we not take him... And I'd like to keep this focused on skill set and him filling a need for us, rather than who we should take instead of him.

He is gonna be a bust...Fua 2.0. Calling it now. Say whatever the fug you want but I dont want to waste a pick for a second DT who will fail miserably.

And what if he turns out to be a beast on another team? Rumor is, 49ers are wanting to move up around our pick, and draft him. Giants are known for their dlinemen, wouldn't surprise me if Gettle continued the formula.

They play two different positions. Fua did not have a great college career like Richardson. Even then Sheldon isn't a stud. He is above average, athletic, strong and nimble. Comparing the two is asenine.

Here are a few reasons (legit or not) that I have in my head why we should NOT draft Richardson (what you asked for--please feel free to correct any misinformation that I may have used to develop bias):

1. He is not known for holding his ground at the point of attack. That means he is a one gap shooter--living in the backfield. He can disrupt plays, resulting in tackles in the backfield, but he can also take himself out of plays. I would trap his side and run through his gap.

2. He plays with a high pad level. I heard the same thing about Marvin Austin, who went to the Giants.

3. Dwan Edwards can do what he does. He had 6 sacks last year. In addition, we brought Hardy or Alexander inside on passing downs. Where does Richardson fit?

4. We signed a starter (arguably) in Edwards. I am thinking that the #14 pick will be a starter.

5. DTs tend to bust a lot, especially the gap-shooters.

6. Richardson got by on his motor in college, and I think that is great, but you need more to succeed in the NFL. You need technique, work ethic, and coachability. Not sure he has all 3.

We may get a run stuffier depending on how Coach feels Kerse and Fua are developing but our more obvious need on defense is in the secondary. With some teams like the Saints and Broncos you are not going to get to the qb so you need guys that can cover. As safety will help in those situations. We have some pretty good TEs in our division.

    • The last thing I want to do is read what the average fan thinks.  Most can't think past the last game they watched. Now we have people trying to say we were really pretty good last year and the whole problem was just Bryce.  The coaching staff, playcalling, play of the rest of the team was not good.  Giving up on a high draft pick after nearly killing him with 9 different starter at guard, horrible play calling and a below average run game is not a recipe for a rookie QB.  I'm not blind.  His play the first two weeks of this season was awful and 100% is not good enough to play QB in the NFL, starter or backup.  If this is who he is and there is no hope for improvement then he'll be out of the league soon enough.  Go watch the All 22 film.  There is a lot of horrible plays but there are also a lot of good one.  NFL level ability, throws and runs.  More than enough examples of good plays to say if he can play like that consistently then he can be an NFL starting QB. It's very easy to see the biggest problem now is his confidence which has caused him to regress even more and make his good traits average or worse and his bad traits look like they can't be fixed. We know he's a young kid. We know last year the panthers did a horrible job putting in a position to be successful. We know that our new head coach excels at helping and training QBs. We know we've already paid a good deal of his contract. We know he's very willing to learn and has a good attitude despite his situation. We know he has the raw ability to play at this level because he has already done it. There are a great number of reasons not to throw the kid out on his butt just yet. We are at the bottom of the league.  We don't have the pleasure of throwing any potential away. Worse case we miss out on a 4th or 5th round pick.  Best case, Canales is the real deal and he turns Bryce into the player he was in college but at the NFL level.
