Matt Elam compared to Charles Godfrey

Recommended Posts

The second I think Godfrey is undervalued, he looks bad.

The second I think he's terrible, he has a decent game.

He's pretty much a middle of the road safety that isn't a liability but also nothing special. Average. Not above or below...just average.

FS only or Safety in general?

In madden, I'd take Reed, Troy, Berry, Thomas, Weddle and back then Bob Sanders over Godfrey any day .

Pretty much, Thomas and Berry are complete beasts for user defense....

Godfrey is hugely underated!!! For that matter him and Chris Gamble!!! Godfrey makes is a solid tackler, actually a great tackler, yes he does get ran over every once in a while (year or two in between each other), but for the most part he makes good clean tackles. As for coverage he is kinda of slow coming off the hash.

Godfrey consistantly is one of the worst tackling safties since he entered the league....

If you actually compare his missed tackles vs what the rest of the NFL gets from their guys.

He is a flesh bomber that struggles big time when guys have room to run

I don't agree with you at all. Godfrey is not a top 5 safety but he is surely a good safety. He can tackle and is a great leader. My only knock on him is him coming off of the hash. He's a definite starter, plus he can start on just about every team.

Just because two players are comparable doesn't mean they'll perform alike. Just means they are similar in skillset. Elam could still turn out to be much better than Godfrey is.

EJ Manuel might have a similar skillset to Newton but it is extremely unlikely Manuel will perform as well.

Even so, if you've watched both players play, how can anyone come to think Vaccaro is that much better than Elam to warrant not drafting Elam until the 2nd but drafting Vaccaro at #14? Vaccaro is a more consistent open field tackler (and it isn't because Elam can't tackle in the open field; he just goes for the big hit a lot) but that is it.
