Revis To Bucs, And Why We Should Rejoice

If Revis had been traded to the Panthers, you'd be having a thread to why (1) he's still an elite shutdown cb (2) he's going to come back from his ACL injury quickly and (3) we're going to win the Super Bowl right?

I'd probably just be pissed.

A six year contract with no guaranteed money is a feared death sentence for ANY aging superstar. If you think Revis is going to spend more than two seasons at Tampa without guaranteed cash, you're kidding yourself. Revis will take his chances and be picked up by The Patriots, Browns, Colts, Steelers, or some other franchise with money to spend.

We're supposed to believe a player with a long history of holdouts and complaining about his contract is going to change his spots and suddenly be fine without the guaranteed money? Yeah. . .

with that contract? pssshhh...I'd be pissed. i mean if we had tons of cap room....maybe and added to the defense we already had, but it just takes too many resources for a type of player that just is too overrated. i mean he's good but I'd rather use that money for really good players at several positions and make the defense more balanced.

Again, giving up a #13 pick for a player NO ONE ELSE WAS BIDDING ON, and from a regime desperate to move the player?

agreed. it's as dumb as miami and that contract they gave mike wallace. they had no competition. it was/is a buyers market. it's dumb to pay that much to one player in these conditions. same with the bucs...they had the jets against the wall. no one else wanted the guy. no one is paying that much for corners anymore. it just wasn't worth the draft pick and the pile of money he is going to cost them.

Who says he has to leave Tampa to get guaranteed money?

Pats don't have enough money, the Browns and Colts have $$ but they have holes to fill and I doubt they want to spend that much on Revis. lol Steelers?

He wanted to be paid what he thinks he's worth. He got that. Pretty sure he could've gotten a deal w/ guaranteed money. And again he can always renegotiate w/ Tampa. It's not like that's impossible....

Yeah....

He’s right. Only one team was willing to give up a first-round pick plus a 2014 selection for the hope that Revis will be back to his old self after ACL replacement. Only one team was willing to commit $16 million to him for 2013. (Though it’s not actually guaranteed, there’s no way he’ll be cut before Week One, when his $13 million base salary becomes guaranteed as a practical matter by the labor deal.)

Perhaps most importantly, only one team was willing to do a deal that, if Revis goes back to being Revis, will necessitate an adjustment or risk his third career holdout.

The thinking was that the next contract for Revis would have to carry enough guaranteed money to make him or his agents never complain again about his compensation. The Bucs instead have created a situation in which it’s highly unlikely that both sides consistently will be content with Revis earning total compensation that equates to $1 million per game.

Giving up a #13 pick for an injured player no one else was bidding for, and the current regime was desperate to move?

If anything, The Jets probably won in the long run. Think about it. If Revis does return to dominate form, Tampa is stuck paying Revis guaranteed money eventually (next year). Meanwhile, New York could just draft a prospect like Rhodes at 13th and pay him a couple mil a year.

I mean it's a risk, but so is any draft pick. Revis is a proven top 3 if not top 2 corner. The Bucs have the money and don't lose anything if they end up cutting him.

That's my point though. It'll only hinder Tampa if Revis didn't lose a step. One way or another, The Bucs are gonna pay a hefty price for Revis.

The Patriots always have money. They sign whoever the hell they want. If New England offers guaranteed money, he'll jump ship for that contract and a possible ring.

Hey, The Bucs need a DT, DE, LB, TE, OT and quite possibly a new QB. Yet they gave away their first round pick and 16 million a year for Revis. If Tampa was daring enough, then so would Indianapolis and Cleveland.

Pats don't have money for a top tier FA. So not sure how they sign whoever they want. Revis wants to get PAID not really ring chasing at this stage in his career.

The Bucs are clearly building a old school team, run and strong defense. Now whether that's a good strategy is another story. They can fill the DT, DE & LB hole in the draft. OT isn't that big of a need.

Cleveland & Indy has rightfully shown 0 interest in Revis. They were probably waiting to see if he reaches FA b4 making a push for him. Don't see why they would suddenly trade for him, knowing they'd have to pay more than the Bucs..
