I like the idea of adding a TE more then another WR.

Because Tavon is a Slot/3rd WR. He isn't lining up on the outside. Plus I'm not for sure that there is a WR in this draft that day one beats Lafell for the #2 spot. But I know a TE can come in and beat Hartsog for the #2 TE spot.

Last Gettelmen said he wanted more Big red zone Targets for Cam. What bigger then a 6'5 and up TE?

I know that, but Tavon is a surefire slot star. And slot receivers can excel in the NFL as more than just the 3rd/4th option. Percy Harvin, Victor Cruz, Wes Welker, Eric Decker, Danny Amendola, Randall Cobb, the list goes on. Even our own Steve Smith was once a slot receiver. Slot guys are changing the game and adjusting to the quickness of the new NFL.

I just don't think you could justify taking a TE at #14 unless you're a team that uses the TE heavily (Pats with Gronk, Saints with Graham) and he'd be a surefire top 3-5 star TE.

i wouldn't disagree if it weren't for steve smith's age and the poor depth at receiver. i love lafell, but let's face it - we're one injury away from having the worst receiving corps in the league.

having a good receiver out there will help open things up for greg and co. anyway (and vice versa.)

You nor I know what the team will use heavliy. We were a top 5 offense with the 2 TE set. We weren't with the 3 wr set.

Also only 1 of those guys were a 1st round pick and none were top 15 picks. Like I said Slot WR's are a luxury just like #2 TE's. So if you can make a argument for one you can do it for the other.

How are we if Olsen gets hurt???

Silly argument because we can say that about a lot of positions.

We are 1 Dwan injury from having the worst DT group.

We are 1 Gross injury form having the worst Oline.

You can't draft because you are 1 injury from this or that.

That's a great point man. It's hard to know yet how Shula will run our offense, which makes it hard to predict what we need more. Cam definitely looked good in the 2 tight end sets with Shockey/Olsen. I was definitely impressed with the way Eifert tracks and adjusts to high passes, that would be a huge help for Cam. Escobar looks similar to Hernandez to me. I would rather have a TE(if Shula uses 2 often) or a bigger WR like a Hunter, or Nuk(I know he's not 6'4 but dude has a big catch radius and is good at jump balls) than Austin IF we go with a weapon for Cam. Then just let Steve work the slot when we need a 3rd Wr. We are great at moving the ball between the 20's but we have struggled with scoring TD's instead of FG's. Alot of that was Chud and our oline but Cam doesn't have a go to guy in the endzone and it shows.

With the way the league is moving right now, the ability to create havoc at the TE position is a must... Having Olsen and Eifert would be a matchup nightmare... Yes we have other needs that could be met here, but the more I think about it, the more I love the idea of Eifert... Add to that, that Atlanta is looking hard to move up (almost guarantee they're looking to replace Gonzo), and I'd love to not only have Eifert in our lineup, but to NOT have to play him twice a year in theirs...

Eifert probably won't make it to our pick in the 2nd, but Zach Ertz might be there. A guy like Joseph Fauria out of UCLA would be good in the 5th or 6th too. He is pretty slow, but is 6-7 and caught 11 td's...would be a good developmental guy. Vance McDonald we could get in the 4th, he did 31 reps at the combine but from what I have seen he needs to work on his hands and he played mostly out of the slot at Rice. I am with you, we need to get back to two tight end sets as it works well with what Cam likes to do it seems.
