Jordan says Charlotte Hornets "sounds good"

I'm only 17, so my childhood wasnt spent at Hornets games. I don't know how great it truly was unfortunately. I want the Hornets name back just because it's proven to gain more fans and the colors are so much better and the name also simply sounds better. But will I lose any sleep if they say they won't be changing the name? Nope. I love the Bobcats and went to 7 games this year, they were 6-1 when I was in attendance.

And I guarantee you these people saying they've never been to a Bobcats game but would get season tickets if they were the Hornets would also come out if the BOBCATS were playing in the Eastern Conference Finals.

So I'd like the Hornets back, but it's not a big deal to me. I just want a winning NBA team in Charlotte.

I really don't know why there is so much Jordan hate. I really do think their is a misconception about a lack of desire to win on his part. He told us in essence, that we we're going to be bad for a few years because of cap creation and clearing bad contracts. He hired a good GM, and now we're getting ready to have a ton of cap room this year. The Bobcats are going to be a lot better starting next year, then more so, the year after. I know Jordan isn't perfect, and he has had to learn as an owner and all that, but I consider creating a ton of cap space and bringing the Hornets back at the same time a brilliant move. As dumb as it sounds I do believe names have a stigma that impact performance. If I'm an NBA free agent, and I get offered from the Celtics.. I would do more to prepare in anyway I could for a team that carries that kind of tradition. Good player aren't motivated to play for the Bobcats, but they would be more motivated to play for the Charlotte Hornets.

Agreed, and you even left out that we have been stockpiling future 1st round draft picks as well, while we cleared space and got rid of bad contracts.

It is an immediate results world and MJ is an easy target, but he has us pointed in the right direction and kudos to him for not getting impatient and trying to build this the right way.

I don't really doubt Jordan's desire to win. Yeah, there have been reports of a laid back approach to team ownership in the past, but some of that's subject to interpretation. And anyone who has worked with him or been around him says he's super competitive in whatever he does.

His ability to craft a winning team from a management standpoint though? That can rightly be scrutinized.

Derp.

I was told by someone fairly high up in the Bobcats he did not feel the name change would happen. I just pass along the info.

But keep nipping at my heels, it tickles.

I am 100% sure that someone fairly high up told you that it was unlikely. I just like giving you poo about the T McClain comment from a couple of years ago.

Even though I thought McClain had a ton of potential too.

This^^^

He has had a tendancy in the past to surround himself with "yes men".....and when you are a person who tends to make bad business decision, "yes men" are not what you need.

I believe he has now figured it out and the hiring of Cho was the right move....guy appears to know what he is doing.

I'm still waiting to hear one legit argument against the rebrand. I haven't heard a single one. Here's a summary of what I hear, let me know if I missed anything:

1. Changing the name won't bring wins/ Charlotte fans care more about the team name than wins: This argument is a cleverly played fallacy. It is correct that the name won't bring wins and the Charlotte Hornets will not sell out games 5 years from now if the team is 10-20 games per year. The two, however, are completely in related. Keeping the name won't bring wins either. I do believe, however, that a rebrand will give attendance and merchandise sales a boost and present an opportunity to put a winning team on the floor to maintain it. I grew up in Charlotte and have lived in Arizona since 2002. I have never identified with the Bobcats. I've never watched an entire game. I had season tickets to the Hornets before I left. I went to almost every game. I live in Arizona, will I buy season tickets if they rebrand? No, I won't. However, I own probably about $1000 in Panthers merchandise and subscribe to the Sunday ticket so that I can watch every game. I go to every game that the Panthers play in Arizona or San Diego. I usually travel to Charlotte once a year and always plan my trip around the Panthers season. I own 0 Bobcats merchandise and have never watched an entire game. I have never even thought too look at the schedule to see when the Cats play the Suns. If they rebrand, I will buy the NBA package, i will buy merchandise, I will go to games when they play out here. I will go to games when I'm in town. I've never looked up the merchandise sells, but i usually Charlotte Hornets gear out here in the Phoenix area once a month or so. I have never seen a songle Bobcats or New Orleans Hornets hat/ shirt/ etc. Winning Hornets team > than winning Bobcats team. Losing Hornets team > losing Bobcats team. That's the only comparison that should be made.

2. Fans want the Hornets name back for racist reasons: I've never heard this one until I read this thread, but I'll address it. I can't speak for everyone, but this doesn't really make sense in my head. Don't the Bobcats have a black majority owner right now? So if they rebrand, won't the Hornets have a black majority owner? I'm confused. I can't speak to the hip hop music at games comment. I've never been to a Bobcats game. I like hip hop, I hope they'll play some when I go to to my next Charlotte Hornets game.

3. The Pelicans keep the Charlotte Hornets wins/ records/ etc: Finally an arguement with some validity and one that we that support the rebrand must consider. I will admit that this one caused me to pause. I wouldn't really be MY team that I used to love. I thought about it and decided that I don't care. I realized that I have no idea how many wins the Charlotte Hornets had. I have never gone to look that stuff up. All I know is that I was there when Rex Chapman and Kelly Tripucka played. I was at the game when Zo hit that shot to beat the Celtics in the play offs. I cried when we lost to the Knicks in the next round. I watched Scott Burrell, Kendall Gill, Johnny Newman, LJ, Eddie Jones, Glen Rice, Jamal Mashburn, David Wesley, and Baron Davis. I handed my infant daughter wearing her Hornets onsie to Bobby Phills so he could, "sign her," about a week before he died. She's 13 now. I still have that onsie. Regardless of what the NBA official stats say, those were my Charlotte Hornets. These new Charlotte Hornets will be as well.

Call me stuck in the past, racist, or someone that cares more about a name than winning. You won't hurt my feelings. I loved the Charlotte Hornets growing up. I've never been able to identify with the Bobcats. I know MJ has some work to do to put a winning team on the floor, but I'm excited to see my Charlotte Hornets back on the court. I might even plan a trip back home to see their first game. I want to hear that buzzing sound before player introductions and hear the announcer say, "Charlotte, get on your feet and welcome home YOUR Charlotte Hornets."

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
