Guess the (late round) draft prospect: Safety

Stumpy

Recommended Posts

Thought it might be cool to do one of these for each of our (commonly accepted) positions of need, WR, DT, CB, RG, OT, TE and, obviously, Safety.

With as many holes as this team has, we cannot address all them in the first 2 rounds. We all have our preferred positions we want to take first, but most will not get their way.

So let us get to know some guys the Panthers may be looking at on days 2 and 3, without the burden of Alma-mater-colored glasses.

(Difficulty: paraphrased, so no google.)

The player's name will be revealed in the next thread with links to multiple scouting reports, including the one paraphrased here...

Strengths

+Solid range, rolls laterally with ease

+Not easily juked by shiftier RBs and WRs

+Extremely intelligent player, ability to call audibles on the fly and good leader.

+ Great field vision, doesn't bite on play fakes.

+Sticks to his assignments, and doesn’t fall for double moves or misdirection plays

+Defensive Back Leader

+Leads by example, heavy hitter and has a mean streak when taking on would be blockers.

+Clearly comfortable in zone coverage with the play in front of him

+Gets a good break on the ball by reading the WR and the QB

+Follows the QB laterally as he rolls out of the pocket

+Smart player who knows where the WR is in his zone at all times.

+Has the physicality to be good in press coverage

+Has experience playing up in the box

+Knows how to avoid traffic and sheds blockers in run support

+Attacks the LOS downhill when asked

+Solid tackler who can lay a big hit.

+Always looking to strip the ball loose.

Weaknesses

-Only average speed and leaping ability, will have to give faster guys extra cushion.

-Appears slow in switch from backpedal to sprint, WR’s might get behind him

-Relies mainly on instincts and diagnostic ability in man coverage

-At times plays too much read and react

-Can be over aggressive and probably would have earned a few 15 yard penalties in the NFL for a few plays this season.

-Not an ideal slot matchup.

-Stiff hips could be a problem at the next level

Overview

He has good size, and excellent prodcution. His INTs are a bit inflated due to tipped passes, but you still have to be in the right place at the right time, and he clearly is. Projects as a versatile NFL SS who can play deep or in the box. A sure tackler and gets after the ball when the play is in front of him. His biggest strength though may be his intelligence, he does not get faked out or take false steps. He clearly studies the game and it shows when diagnosing play fakes.
