Panthers were targetting Russell Wilson last year

shaping up to be a real humdinger, this one

Wilson's off to a fast start with a talented and well coached team.

Cam's off to a fast start with a patched and rookie coached team.

I cant help but root for wilson but only 1 plays for my team. Both are from the south and have great character and would shine anywhere they landed.

Sometimes you just know, and I have that feeling with both.

If the Seahawks had Cam & Wilson, which one do you think would've started?

If Cam was selected by the Seahawks at #1 in 2011 and had the same rookie season, or we had traded Cam Newton to the Seahawks in 2012 and they still selected Wilson in the third, then I honestly think that Newton would probably have been their starter. Generally you don't ditch a number #1 pick QB that is coming off a record breaking rookie season for a third round pick, no matter how well he performs in off season. Nor do you trade for one and give up the house (i.e. to trade for Cam would require at least two first round picks if not more), only to select a third round QB and start him.

Even if Cam and Wilson were drafted by the Seahawks in the same draft, it would be unlikely for Wilson to win the starting position. Cam would have been at the very least the third pick off the board in 2012, and Wilson would still have been a third round pick. So you don't really start a third round pick over a top three pick from the first round.

For me, both guys have had excellent starts to their career, and potentially are future elite QBs. Comparing them is not entirely fair because Wilson has the better surrounding cast and coaching setup around him. The Seahawks last season were in a better position to win and get to the play offs. So I think that if you plcae Cam in that team, then I think he would have taken them as far as Wilson did last year, and with my Panthers' hat on, if not further.

But to answer the question, Cam Newton would have started over Russell Wilson regardless of which team because Cam was a #1 pick in 2011 and had a record breaking rookie year, and if drafted in 2012 he would have been a top three pick, and you generally don't drop a Cam Newton type pick for a third round QB.
