Short and concise thought on the Draft, FA, Trades, and the BPA

Is drafting really all about needs, or more about opportunities?

People put a lot of weight on the draft, as well they should, but I believe that sometimes the draft overshadows the other two parts of building the team which is mining the value out of free agency, and devising trades that make sense. Yes, it's nice to get the homegrown players (if you will) that you can develop. And it's nice to hit the mark on players that you draft----not only in the first couple of rounds, but any round. The thing is though that drafting involves many misses also, so, in a way, free agency and trades can be just as important, and sometimes more important than what are perceived as draft needs. Furthermore, because of the hit-miss nature of drafting, sometimes you just have to pull the trigger on the can't-miss prospect when they fall in your lap, no matter the position. There is a school of thought that may see this as counterproductive, but it's like having more money: it may not make you happy, but it gives you more options at the end of the day. You can leverage that investment to get not only what you need, but what what you want at a later time.

fill holes via FA or trades and get the best talent in the draft.

if you draft to answer needs, aside from maybe QB, you are likely going to be reaching and very well could be missing out on opportunities to get great players.
