As much as I would like Tavon or Cordarelle, I would love to get a 3rd

You know how I have been advocating for a legitimate threat at WR for what seems like years now. The thing is is that I have become somewhat of a draftnik (with thanks to Scot for hipping me to the term) for the last couple of years. Moreover, I have become more in tune with the business side of the ball especially this year, thanks to the realities of the cap. To be honest, a few years ago I could have cared less about reading scouting overviews, looking at Youtube, and having one eye/ear open to ESPN or the NFL Network as I go on about life. Likewise, all these numbers just bored the hell out of me basically. I was only concerned with the final product. I mean, I couldn't do anything about the rest of it anyway.

Now, I guess I am maturing as a fan, or at least that's one way to define my present obsession with all these off-the-field-behind-the-scenes issues. It may not be so much maturing as it is becoming more informed. I have come to the realization that what fans want and what is best for the team may not only be counterproductive, but even counterintuitive at times, especially within the context of fiscal realities. Putting a great team together is a puzzle that's more complex than most people know, and there are many more factors to take into account than even some of a team's most ardent supporters are even aware of, much less privy to at the end of the day. In other words, most of us may think we know what's going on and how to put it all together, but we don't know poo. That being said, it's still fun to be armchair scouts and GMs. And, there is absolutely nothing wrong as fans to question, moan, and/or spew fire when things are going bad, just as we cheer and praise the organization when things are going well.

Getting back on point, I would love to see Tavon Austin in teal and black (and I absolutely wouldn't have any complaints if we pick him or Cordarelle Patterson at 14), but I would love to trade back and reacquire a third round pick because overall I think it may be better for the team. With the depth at the position, as well as depth at DT in 2013, we may ultimately be able to meet our goal of filling all our holes and/or adding quality depth to not only be successful in 2013, but for years to come. We should hope that some team like the 49ers, Pats, or Rams want Patterson, Austin, or even Keenan Allen so much that they would give us that third. I'd even be willing to give up our 6th or 7th to make that happen, and hope that Deandre Hopkins or Justin Hunter is on the board when we pick in the first. With guys like Ryan Swope, Aaron Dobson, Justin Brown, Bacarri Rambo, Shamarko Thomas, Matt Elam, Tyrann Matthieu, Kawann Short, Josh Boyd, Omar Hunter and/or Montori Hughes likely to be available in the third or fourth (some more likely than others), that 3rd round pick could prove to be a profound---if not critical---piece of our puzzle in the coming years.

im starting to love this season just as much as the regular season, and also consider myself a draftnik. i watch many college games now with the intentions of looking at certain prospects and how they can translate to certain teams in the NFL. if we do pass on WR in the 1st two rounds i think we have to land somebody like Kenny Stills from Oklahoma. he has made some clutch catches, has deep speed, and would flourish in a vertical system.(Chud and Browns like him, has made a visit there)

You dont think we can still trade back and get a Tavon or especially Patterson?

Patterson is likely to fall and Tavon should be the no.2 receiver off the board, if not the first. Tavon had to declined many pre draft visit invitations. If we were to trade back, and I think we could still get a Patterson. But he's not my top5 receiver right now.

Yeah, I've looked him up also. The only thing that scares me about him is his lack of physicality. I don't care about speed so much, but I would definitely prefer someone who can and will bully not only smaller corners, but the bigger guys. But, like you alluded to, in round 3 he would be a good pick-up. Aaron Dobson intrigues me more though.

he is physical at the catching point, and is not scared to go up with DBs and high point the football. Dobson is intriguing as well, but he kinda did a disappearing act his senior season.i do like he had 0 drop %.

Well, you never know how the draft is gonna shake out, but I'd be surprised if we could trade back and get Austin. He may not even be available at 14. Even though CP is more of a project, his intangibles may be too much for the Rams (16) and Steelers (17) to let slip by. Anything is possible though. I would love to trade back and get either one, but I'd be smiling with D-Hop.

more picks are needed and we won't lose out on much quality by dropping back 5-10-15 spots or whatever.

it's a solid draft and we'll see a ton of talent drop and available throughout the first three rounds.

it won't hurt us to stand pat, but we'll definitely benefit by dropping back and picking up another pick.

my hope is that we find ourselves a trade like we had with the jets a few hears back where we picked up another second and a fifth. it happened before, it can happen again. since we seem to have our eyes on quite a few players, i don't think we'll put up much of a fight if someone comes knocking for the #14.

Even if we can find a team who is tripping over themselves to trade up it all depends on what we receive in return. We absolutely need to get one of the better receivers in this draft, and depending on where we end up trading back to the better prospects may have flown off the board already. I think once a few of them come off it will start a domino effect rather quickly. We aren't the only team out there with a need at the position. Whether we trade back or not either way we are at a disadvantage. I'm glad Gettleman is at the helm.
