A high drafted rookie WR is more likely to help Rivera than a rookie DT....if you go off recent history at the positions. Vet DT is the best way to win now on the DL if Rivera.

As far as examples how about the Vikings drafting Randy Moss while Chris Carter was still playing at a high level. The Niners took T.O(2nd rd) while Rice was still playing, The Packers took Jennings(2nd) while Driver was in his prime and they had a strong passing game already, Ravens took Torry Smith when already had Boldin. Cardinals took Fitzgerald when they had Boldin. I mean I can keep going here. Even we took fug face Keary Colbert when we had Steve Smith and Moose. You want your number 1 to help groom his replacement.

Show me a team that did NOT have a 2 and drafted a receiver at 14. Show me any team that drafted a guy at 14 to not start at the 1 or 2 on day1.

And Minnesota had a decent number 2, maybe Burleson can't remember. The Niners had some decent number 2 also I thought, not great but average kinda like Lafell so they took T.O. And again I didn't say had to be at 14. I'm a bigger fan of the Hopkins, Hunter, Patton group than Patterson, Austin or Allen. If we take a DT or CB/S at 1 then get one of those WR's I will be happy as hell. I just think yall totally discarding WR as a need is shortsighted.

And no DT gets a 100% of the snaps they rotate. Plus no guarantee your rookie DT starts or plays well if he does start. Rookie Dt's usuually struggle

You don't wait until Smith retires or sucks to draft a WR you think could be a #1....you do that now. You hope he can be a 1 by the time Smith isn't the guy.

Reality is it is an offense league overall and we have a Newton team....he needs weapons and we need to plan short and long term for that....which is why drafting a WR now makes sense. We are long overdue in grooming our next number 1....that guy should of already been drafted. Our next number one doesn't have to look like AJ Green or get off to his start

3 of the top 5 defenses made it and 3 of the top 5 offenses made it. It was 5 and 6 when you look at the top 10 offense and defense. So the league is still split between good Offense and good defenses. And you can win with either one.

But we must not forget the 2 teams playing in the Superbowl were know more for their defense then their offense.

We were out the playoff race the last 2 years by midseason. I don't think in the top 15 you draft a player you have to wait on to have a impact.

Im not short sighting receiver at all. There is a very real need for someone to step up there. If I had to roll dice. . I would say between Ginn, Hixon, Gettis, Pilares, and the others that there is a chance any of them could step up. Im excited to see what happens in training camp.

How about Martin in the backfield again? Safety is another spot that we are in desperate need of. How about corner? We just lost the only good player we had there as well? Is Thomas gonna shut down Fitz like Gamble did, no. Is Thomas gonna shutdown Jennings like Gamble did, no. Can Thomas tackle like Gamble could in the open field, no. So I think we could use some help there as well.

So do non elite WR but at least we have a few of those on the roster already.

Go back and look at first round WRs and DTs.....say from 2007 through 2010. They have a body of work to judge them.....Larger percentage of WRs are still with the team that drafted them. Larger percentage of DTs busted.

And it takes even the really good rookies awhile to get going...take my boy Luke last year. Started the season as a 2 down LB teams actually picked on....then turned into a beast. Just isn't realsitc to expect rookies to be studs week 1.
