Yes or no, is it easier to get away from a defender (get open) if a WR is faster or slower? Speed isn't everything, never said it was, but to think it is NBD is ludicrous and doesn't make sense. Easier to get away from the cops in a Lambo or a Corolla?

Well what good is speed if you cant actually drive the car or in a wide receivers case, run routes?

It's not conjecture to say that one WR who has been struggling with a knee injury two years ago should not be replace by another WR struggling with an injury using the 14th overall pick in the draft.

Now that you bring up Brandon Hogan, he was also productive in college and considered 1st or 2nd round pick. Guess what, a knee injury caused him to slide to us in the 4th. And how many snaps did Hogan play? That was a waste of a pick and it was a 4th rounder, that same 4th rounder could have been Richard Sherman, who is a top 3 corner. Just like this 1st round pick could be someone else who has less risk and possibly more reward.

So Allen clocked in at 4.71 at his pro day. umm ok.

If speed is not a concern then why did Allen say he thought he would run a 4.4. Now he runs a 4.7 and there are plenty of excuses. Doctors say he is 100% but trainers say he is at 75- 80%. I have had a ligament injury and the first thing that comes back is straight line speed. The last to come back is lateral speed and the ability to make sharp fast cuts and change direction. That isn't to say he won't or can't get faster but lets be honest, receivers in this league have to be fast and quick and right now he is neither. He won't be the impact guy people want this year and may be like Gettis who needed a whole year to rehab his knee. It has been 5 months and he is still not back to speed on lateral drills which is a very early precursor to being ready to take hits on your knee or elude defenders at full speed or to go from standing to full speed in a few seconds. He is likely 2 or 3 months away from being even ready to begin practice let alone practice fully.

At 14 you want a guy who can contribute right away not someone who might be good down the road. Allen would be a huge risk at 14 but might be an acceptable risk at 44. Frankly with these numbers the only way he stays a first rounder is because of the lack of high quality receivers in this draft and the desire of every team to improve their passing game.

As for all the intangibles and other qualities which make up for the lack of speed. This was Jarrett when we drafted him.

Dwayne Jarrett- Junior- Pac 12

40 time 4.62

20 yard dash- 2.64

3 cone- 7.28

20 yard shuttle- 4.20

Strengths- great hands and size- red zone weapon- good concentration. Some sites said he blocked well others said he needed to improve.

Weaknesses- not a polished route runner, lacks elusive speed, and can be lackadaisical at times.

Kennan Allen- Junior- Pac 12 school

40 time- 4.71

Can't see he even attempted the cones or shuttle. I doubt he can do them yet.

Strengths- size, catching ability, good route runner, able to use body to fend off smaller corners (will be much harder to duplicate in the NFL)

Lacks elusive speed, not a great blocker down field, only one year of really stand out results. (yeah it was all his brother's fault.)

Yeah I condensed the writeups on both of them but you get the point. we drafted this guy a few years ago and how did that work out?

Why pick a guy with lots of question marks who is coming off an injury who may or may not be ready to play this year when there are other receivers like Patterson or Hopkins who are better options. The only negative is that I thought we could get Hopkins in the second and with Allen likely to fall, it raised Hopkins stock.

As for Mayock, he liked Gabbert over Newton- need I say more...............

Just seen some of Keenan's pro day highlights and an interview from the local Greensboro channel 8 news.

The kid looked really good. Better than what I've read from some of the posts on here.

Didn't see Keenan made any body catches from the few highlights. All great hands grabbed and made an amazing one handed catch. Well worth the no.14 pick for sure.

God forbid Mike Mayock like many of us here didn't think much of Newton. Much less agreed with him at the time about Gabbert. Some of you act like you don't make mistakes at all. Mayock is often right than wrong. I'll take his word more seriously than any of you any given day.

Funny how Mayocks credibility is question with the old " Mayock thought Gabbert was better gaiz" argument. LOL man..

Doing well at a pro-day is expected. Everything is geared for him to perform at his best. He does what he wants to do, avoids things that will make him look limited. He is catching the ball with no defenders on him and running all the routes he has practiced for the last several weeks. The only news is when a guy looks bad in his pro day or in his case runs poorly. Pro days are really a joke. If we want him we will bring him in for a physical and to put through our drills. That will tell us what we need to know. That and the tape we can find of him from his sophomore and junior years. I really doubt we draft him at 14. Sorry to disagree with all the Allen fans who have beating his drum for weeks. But I said if he ran between 4.6 and 4.7 it would raise flags. Since he ran between 4.7 and 4.8 it raised even more flags. We have linebackers much faster than him.

Interesting to note that three guys in this segment-including Mayock and Casserly, both respected guys-have clocked him at 4.55 on tape.

It'd be a real shame if he slipped and the rich got richer.
