Tommy Kelly off the market

Patriots agreed to terms with DT Tommy Kelly on a two-year contract.

Kelly, 32, recorded 45 tackles and one sack in Oakland last season, starting all 16 games. He graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 74 defensive tackle among 85 qualifiers. At 6-foot-6, 300-plus pounds, Kelly does offer flexibility to play end in 3-4 looks and rush from the interior on passing downs, although it remains to be seen how much he's got left in the tank. We suspect the Patriots are guaranteeing Kelly little or no money.

Only decent guy left is Seymour.

This is a typical Belicheck hiring where he tries to take an over hill guy, sign him for cheap and then hope he has something left in the tank. I wonder if this is one reason the Patriots defense has been so poor as of late......

They also signed Armstead. He was an absolute beast in the CFL (led that defense).

so how many CFL defenders have been good in the NFL. I suspect if there were many more free agents would come from there. Sounds like he is getting pretty desperate to try and find talent on the cheap.

DE/OLB Cameron Wake for Miami

CB Brandon Browner of Seattle.

Id take em.. not a lot but those two are boarderline elite or really good.

The majority of stars have been offensive players like Jeff Garcia, Joe Horn, Joe Theismann, Warren Moon, etc. Not many have been defensive players. If you look at Armstead it looks like 6 sacks is pretty good but when you consider they play 19 games, pass almost 80% of the time and have a 20 second play clock so there are a lot more opportunities to get sacks, that is a pretty small number.

Have you even seen him play? Armstead is a dominant UT. He was a stud in college (a Top 5 pick before the medical issues and lawsuit) and took the CFL by storm in his only season.

I did. He was not dominant for USC. His freshman year he had 10 tackles and 1 sack, his sophomore year he had 6 tackles and no sacks. His junior year he had 43 tackles and 6 sacks. He didn't play his senior year. So I don't know how he could be a top 5 prospect. He wasn't even tops in his conference. One year out of four hardly makes him dominant. If that is dominant your standards are pretty low...... he was 13th in sacks in the CFL in 2012..... Hardly a beast..........

I would take Dwan Edwards over him any day.....

I weep for you, if that's the case. Armond (like Dorsey) was projected to go in the Top 5-10 after his Junior year. He was named of one of the best defensive talents of 2010. Armstead, of course, was going to return to USC for his Senior season, but suffered medical complications.

You're full of it if you claim to have watched him play in the CFL. Armstead took double teams constantly and made his fellow DL teammates better as a result. If you're willing to sneeze at 6 sacks, then you have absurd expectations. Incidentally, Armond got more pressure on opposing QBs than 45% of DEs did.

Your use of hyperbole makes any statements you make suspect at best. You weep for me???? Either you are a literary major or you are the one full of it.

And his medical complications included having a heart attack. I can see why he was not drafted and given he won't cost more than the veteran minimum with no guaranteed money I can see why NE pulled the trigger. But to gust about him as you do makes me think he is a relative or you are his agent.

Seriously though, I do watch the CFL at times and while I didn't concentrate on him, I did watch his team. Did you know that Armond had 19 tackles and 1 sack through the first 10 games. If you just count the first 16 games equivalent to the NFL you have 4 sacks not 6. And honestly 4 sacks in the CFL is like a guy who runs for 1100 yards in division 2 football. Good for the competition you are playing against but hardly great or dominant.
