I hate playing Birkdale for this reason....something about that course brings the a$$hole out of everyone. I don't think I have ever walked off that course without being pissed off at someone.

He definitely got hosed on that shot. Instead of 5 under one shot back he's three shots back.

They showed his drop and it was more like 2 feet.

I have no idea if that qualifies "as close as possible" to the original shot. Seems to be a grey area.

Q.In the circumstances described in Decision 26-1/16, what is the ruling if A, having dropped a ball in a wrong place, plays it before his error is discovered?

A. Player A must continue play with the ball played from a wrong place, without penalty. Applying a penalty under Rule 26-1 for playing from a wrong place (see Rule 20-7) is not appropriate. Otherwise, a competitor would risk incurring a penalty every time he makes an honest judgment as to the point where his ball last crosses a water-hazard margin and that judgment subsequently proves incorrect.

No DQ, two stroke penalty based on New USGA TV rule.

Brandel Chamblee is saying on golf channel that Tiger should have DQ'd himself, and I agree.

I don't think he broke a rule intentionally but he did break the rule as written and signed an incorrect scorecard.
