Jake In Progress

I hate so much that HE IS A LOSER WHEN HE THROWS 30+ passes stat for any QB. I can't even tell you how much I hate it. Ok I can. I have always thought it was so much BS that I actually spent a bit of time here looking at all the main starters and their teams' records when they threw 30+ passes. Guess what I found? Even guys people think of as top notch are usually on teams that are right around or below .500 when their QBs pass 30+ times. Why? Well duh, it usually means your defense sucks and you are playing catch up.

The only QBs whose teams had pretty good record in that situation (which with THIS stat is a game or two above .500!) had one thing in common: a top ten scoring defense (P. Manning, E. Manning, Pennington, Cassel, Collins, McNabb & Roethlisberger).

Preach it Fireball! And for the record, that Chargers game last year was the only time Jake threw the ball 40 times and he won the damned thing.

Love it or hate it, our defense trailed off last year and that's what people remember. Bad defense and bad QB play.

Everyone forgets the early games where the D was great, jake was tight. The biggest danger we have on this team is that happening, some quick scores leading to jake being under pressure to deliver.

That part kind of stopped me as well. I understand it in theory: if one team is passing more and putting points up quickly, then the Panthers will have to follow suit.

But if we're running the ball well and controlling the clock, aren't we keeping these "high-powered" offenses off the field?

I don't think anything is going to sway Carolina from the run, save a team just completely shutting us down in that area. Fox has wanted a power running game since the days of Stephen Davis, and he finally has one.

Exactly, who cares if the other team is throwing the ball down the field and scoring in a couple of minutes as long as we are scoring every time we have the ball? That playoff first drive was awesome and then we totally abandoned the run. We were getting 20 yards a carry and we totally abandoned the run. Who cares if Arizona threw it down the field, just go back to what's working and keep them off the field...

That's what I have been saying ever since we lost that game. If you march down the length of the field, breaking off big runs left and right, and you score to start the game, that's awesome. Then when they come back and score on you, it sucks, but hey, that's football. Then you turn it over and they score again, that sucks too. But you don't totally abandon your game plan after being down 14-7 going into the 2nd quarter. In fact, even if you are down two touchdowns going into the 4th, you can have a good 7 or 8 minute drive to score, hold them, and then have a good 4-5 minutes to put together another drive.

I guess I just hate how quickly teams sometimes throw their gameplan away when it doesn't go like clockwork right away. Especially how Carolina is built. With our line and Williams and Stewart, the big run WILL come eventually, if you just keep pounding the rock.

Yeah, pretty much what happened that game and I agree with your take...

I hope Fox has kicked his own ass over and over because of that.

Hopefully they learned from it.

The record when Delhomme throws 30+ times in a game is a bit misleading. When we're throwing the ball that often that means we're far behind and/or the run game isn't effective. Either way we're probably going to lose and that's not something you can all put on Jake.

It is, if he has thrown needless interceptions, holds the ball too long and gets killed in the pocket, and fumbles.

No offensive line can hold off a D-line forever. Delhomme is not mobile back there. He stands like a statue and if hit, he fumbles.

I respectfully disagree with that. You are right in the fact that Jake is in no way, shape or form a mobile quarterback. However, most of his sacks that result in fumbles are coverage sacks. Some plays that take longer to develop need the o-line to create more of a wall with the pocket, keeping their man in front of them. Shorter yardage throws usually mean the o-line will create a more conventional pocket where pushing your man behind and outside of the quarterback gives you enough time to get the throw off. Jake fumbles usually when his arm is up but the coverage is good and he can't make the throw before the d-lineman gets around on him. This is the same reason he makes those "needless" (is there any other kind?) interceptions. Because he feels pressure and opts to throw into coverage.

This is why there is a lot to be said for quarterbacks that have a very fast throwing motion, and don't need to have their arm cocked back for too long before throwing. Don't get me wrong, a lot falls on Jake, but football is the ultimate team game, and all the parts got be working perfectly on every given play for it to work. Just my .02

Jake had 10 games last year where he didn't throw an interception.

As for Fumbles: He fumbled 5 times and lost it 3 times all season. He was sacked 20 times so he fumbled once for every 7 sacks.

Lets compare that to Kurt Warner for example who was sacked 26 times but fumbled 11 times and lost 7 of them.

How about a mobile quarterback like Flacco he was sacked 32 times, fumbled 11 and lost 2.

I don't see Jake as worse than anyone else.

    • They can’t reasonably fire a rookie head coach who was saddled with one of the worst first overall QBs of all time. And at times made said QB look decent to serviceable.  If the team was 3-11 at this point next season, fire everyone.

    • Weird things also happen when you include garbage time games in your averages. Chicago and Washington he came in with like 2 min left.  The remaining 9 games which he started, 1,737 yards, 193 yards/game. Still low but let’s all be clear the number reported isn’t correct.
