He's there because 1) he was fine with not giving his best effort - or much effort at all - despite being paid a ridiculous salary, and 2) he pissed away what was the highest rookie contract ever stupidly.

Has he realized the error of his ways? Maybe, but then lots of guys suddenly "see the light" when they're broke. Sometimes it's real, sometimes not. Look at Ryan Leaf, for example.

I'll wish him good luck same as I would anybody.

I never really pegged Newton and Russell as two guys who would have gotten along well even before all that stuff came out.

Just to be clear...I watched every one of those videos and I wish the man the absolute best. I would never deny anyone a second chance. In doing so, I would be saying that I do not deserve a second chance if I ever screwed up.

Playing Devil's advocate, it's really not Russell's fault he was put in the position he was in. I had never really heard of the guy before LSU beat a crappy Notre Dame team the year of that draft, now all the sudden all you heard about from every "draft guru" was the guy who could throw 65 yards on one knee.

I'm sure his lack of worth ethic showed in college and high school, and didn't just start in the NFL, so scouts knew. But people were too caught up in his intangibles,and handed him a huge check. He didn't make any promises, he just continue being who he was (lazy and unmotivated).

To be honest, I feel Peppers is the same way. Peppers just gets by on his talent more, and it's easier to get by on talent at DE then it is on QB, the most difficult to play position in any sport.

Im not so sure about that. He has perfect timing considering this is one of the worst QB draft classes in awhile, a lot of teams are desperate for a QB and there is just such limited supply of them now. Name a FA QB now that has the potential and arm of a 255 lb motivated Jamarcus Russell with something to prove. Ryan Fitzpatrick? John Skelton? I cant think of any.

Fitzpatrick's numbers last year were better than anything Russel put up. Skelton's worst year was around Ruseels best year. Russel hasn't taken a snap in 3 years and is considered mentally and physically damaged. And he has a criminal history and a history of addiction.

He would have to absolutely demolish a pro workout, prove he is in shape and handling whatever issue he had in the past and even then he isn't walking into a starting role.

I would happily wager $100 that he doesn't attend any camp

Dunno if he is an addict but he tested positive for Codeine in 2007 and was arrested for it in 2010. This is not a societal issue, it's an NFL issue. I don't care what other people put in their bodies...unless it makes the Panthers win less games.
