4-3, 3-4: Which one is harder to beat?

Honestly right now I feel the best type of defense is one that applies consistent pressure out of nickel sets. Many of the best teams at doing this are 3-4 defenses, if I were to guess it is because a 3-4 defense is already used to working with 3 down linemen.

The panthers don't really play a true 4-3 and many teams are looking to diversify and play a hybrid system.

if you had the perfect type of player to play each position in either 3-4 or 4-3 im going to say 3-4 would be far more superior. in 4-3 you basically know whats coming at you. The disguise element with 3-4 with the perfect players can be pretty hard to read and beat

I said it after the Blackburn signing, & been thinkin about it since. I think Rivera is going to throw some old 4-6 looks this season. Like the read option, if used at the right time, could give the opposition some fits. Cant wait to see Brees & Ryan all frustrated cause the pressure is too much.... Dont go changing the whole system, just throw it in a few times a game, 3rd down mostly...

Dont know which is better, dont even know which I prefer to watch. 3-4 is fun cause of the disguising, the element of surprise, if you will. The 4-3, is a bit easier because you know whos coming, but can you stop it? I just realized I prefer the 4-3...

Its all about execution, and having the right players. doesn't matter which system, fundamentally.

Personnel and Coaching is the biggest factor. You can quote number of teams that made the playoffs with a 3-4 but how many of those teams made it because of offense? Packers D sucks, New Englands D sucks, the Redskins were mediocre. I've always felt like the 3-4 was easy to run against and hard to pass against. Especially for non elite QBs. The 4-3 is the jack of all trades, master of none. But to be honest it's all about nickle these days. If you can cover the pass and play the run with 5 defensive backs then you can compete with anyone.

I will say personnel coming from college fits the 3-4 better. Players are getting more athletic and taller/leaner. I would really like to see if someone could put together a massive line and run the ball on all these "little" fast guys.

You can come up with great disguised blitzes in the 4-3. Watch the Jim Johnson defenses.

Many defenses including the Baltimore Ravens' defense employ hybrid schemes so you really shouldn't get obsessed over what front we're running.

If you have the right.players for a 43, is is the hardest to play against.

There aren't enough good 43 ends in the for most defenses to be 43.

There is always.more tweener guys coming out, so there will always be a healthy percentages of 34s.

Both defenses are can be great defenses.

Just takes the right personnel and execution.

Appreciated, but to be fair, I'm not the only one here who knows a thing or two.

What Rivera and McDermott want to run is a base 4-3 with occasional 3-4 packages thrown in. And yes, we have the personnel to do that. To run a 3-4 all the time? Not really. We don't have the "tweeners" you need at OLB for that, and our middle guys are true "mikes" rather than insiders. And I'd have to look but off the top of my head, we don't have anyone I'd want to throw in as a full time nose guard either.

Folks are correct when they say "hybrid really is the trend these days. And bottom line, with the right players and right coaching you can make either scheme work.
